well 1st thing is first well I am trying so hard to SURVIVE with what i got right now witch i have a
Celeron(R) CPU 1.80GHz
and 248 MB of RAM
i have a 32.7 GB Hard Drive
a CD-RW CD-ROM Drive
a Realtek AC'97 Audio Card
an Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
a Linksys NC100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
and this was store bot HP Pavillion 513c
anyways well i need to save as much memory as possible and Hard Drive Space so im wondering witch OS Should i have Windows XP/ME/NT/2000/2000 Pro/XP Pro/98/98 SE/95/Linix i dont know witch for one thing i have such a downgraded computer lol anyways can yall help PLEASE.

Full XP installation takes about 2.5gb of HD space .. you'll still have ~30gb in the end ... 98 is just full of bugs and glitches compared to XP (also less stable, and has little driver support nowadays).

if you want the minimum size possible, try linux :) .. but it's a whole lotta different story ...

You could use Windows ME. I know I'm baiting for a lot of haters right now but they have no clue what they are talking about. I use ME for all my older PCs with limited resources.

ME is basically 98 without a DOS loader (it has a loader similar to an NT loader) and will not allow any program to use REAL mode on the processor, programs that have no business being on your machine anyway nowadays use real mode.

Run a XP laptop with a celeron 2.4 ghz, 256 mb ram, 40 gb hd, dvd/cd burner. It works just fine.

I was just working on a 2000 pro box with an Intel Pro 200mhz with 128 mb ram using only 1.5 gb of the 2 gb available. Guess what? It ran just fine. :D

Linux VS. ME VS. 2000 Pro
1st. of all what id mostly like to ask for linux is. how stable is it, how much resorces dose it take up and most likely is it a complicated computer and 1 more thing can you run half-life on it and steam?

2nd. 2 things to ask about ME How stable is it and how much resorces dose it use

3rd. for Windows 2000 Professional Edition, ok now tell me more about how complicated it is and how stable it is and how much resource space it takes.

Linux is not for you, it is a mean cold harsh realization working from the command line, and even if you use a friendly distribution of linux, it is not automatic, it takes a little work. It can be VERY stable and VERY secure, however this partially depends on the skill of configuring it.

Basically, linux isn't a good choice for what you want. W2K will be right up your alley - familiar, very straight forward, and no problems running the apps you want.

To use, Windows 2000 is just like any other windows you've used. It appears similar to 98, but has stability similar to XP but uses less resources. It is a good match for what you are looking for.

i couldn't agree more with IMOG. i have had many computers that run windows 2000 professional that ran pentium class processors with very little ram. i personally have a computer that runs windows me and i would suggest to you to stay away from windows me due to the fact that it isn't very easy to find drivers that stay up to date for winme. with win2k, many xp drivers work on 2000 and many companies write drivers specifically for win2k. there are still many businesses that use windows 2000 for their workstations since they don't need the "fancy" looks of xp and 2000 works a lot like xp. just take away the skins for xp and you have 2000 (yes i know there are many differences from 2000 and xp, but they basically work the same).

so my vote obviously goes with windows 2000 professional.
