my cel566@850 w/100fsb 1.78volt has been stable for 6 mo. i just raised the fsb to 105 for about 897 at 37c or 101 f. what diff does voltage have when raising the fsb and stress on the cpu. also i'm considering replacing the cpu with a 800 to clock to about 120 mhz. i read one member used the alpha pep66t with good results. i read that the pep66t is a good choice for cel 2 appl. would i benefit if i first replaced my golden orb with the pep66t on my 566 to push it a little higher. if i can get close to the 1 gig mark while increasing the fsb i would be getting overall better perf with my current cpu. i've noticed that some people aren't happy with the orb's cooling.

Get the sk-6 heat sink and fan. You will most likely get to 1 gig. i would be very suprised if you dont. The cooling system will probably go as high until your motherboard wont go any higher with fsb. Just get it. i have it. it is 35 dollars. i got it when it is 70. ouch for me. Get it. And for best performance, get artic silver 2 compund and defintely the delta high output 38cfm fan. it is loud but just blast those mp3's. It is the best air cooling system out there. Go for it.

Many times a bump in voltage is needed to feed the beast (stability wise). And many times after running at an elevated VCC for a time you are able to back'er down a bit. This tends to be the best argument for "burn-in." I personally have never had an Orb, but from friends and various posts I gather they aren't really up to the job when you kick'er in the arse a bit. Running default speeds or a mild oc I've never heard of any probs :) As to would you benefit by switching to the Pep?? Well sure! Even if ya upgrade the cpu, the better cooling ya got the better off yer rig'll be :D

if i decided to raise the fsb gradually after having had the cpu for 6 mos at it's mildly overclocked state, and i started getting excess heat or blue screens or lockups or whatever, how could i tell if it would be wise to raise the cpu volt first before i backed down the fsb. and how much heat is too close too be at.

also, with my abit be6-2 ata 66, i can adj fsb very well indeed. is there going to be a problem with the pci at 1/3 or the agp at 2/3. i think this is the only adj for these two. i have seen mb's which switch from 66 to 100 to 133 mhz and i am sure that these adj the pci and agp for safe op in the 133 range. just not sure about my abit.

First off, the Alpha PEP66 is a good cooler, if you're using a slotket adapter. If you have a socket 370 motherboard, I'd consider other coolers. There are lots of great coolers out there. Personally, I'm using a GlobalWin FOP38 with real good results. Quite pleased, except that blasted Delta 38 fan was WAY too noisy. It drove me crazy. I replaced it with a 80mm High Output fan that flows more air and is significantly quieter.

Next, you've raised your FSB and now you're having stability problems. First thing to do is increase your cooling. Better CPU cooler, better thermal paste, and more case fans are the tried and trued methods. AFTER you've done all the cooling mods, if you're still having stability troubles, try increasing the voltage a bit. I've found that overclocked Celerons like staying under 40 degrees load temps. I don't know if the 37 degrees you mention is full load CPU temp or not. Good luck.

ADDED: I now see that you have an Abit BE6 which should be a slot one motherboard. Therefore, the PEP66 might be one of your better choices. I used to have an Abit BH6 (your board is the next step better) and a C-566. Your PCI bus and AGP will have absolutely no problem up to 112 FSB and probably will do ok even at 115 FSB. Anything above that depends on how good your cards and harddrive is. This is assuming you have good cooling. The Golden Orb won't cut it above 100 FSB. This is also assuming you have a good CPU that will go that high...not all will.

i got the 37c running a performance test with the sandra util. THERE"S a good question, during the test the util did a cmos "dump" possibly to refresh the cmos settings? but when i restarted to finalize a sofware changew for something, the pc would not reboot, dead in the water. after 30 or 40 sec with power off, THEN it would work again. thats was nerve racking, though i had just put the screws to the mb.
