View Full Version : Upgradeing from Windows 98se to 2000..need information...please
This weekend I am getting the world renown Windows 2000 cd (from a friend).
And I was wonder what I should do to prepare, and do while upgradeing.
My current setup is:
Win98se
12x Delta DVD rom
Trident 9750 4 meg(i know its VERY crappy but its temporay)(Waiting for Radeon 64 Sdram to come in from RMA trip)
Diammond Monster 3D II (Voodoo2 for glide apps)
Creative Ensoniq PCI sound card
Aztec MDP7800 Modem
AMD athlon(Slot A) 550mhz ( I have an AXIA 266 1 gig Atlon)
SY-K7VIA (temporay till i get a KT7E or Asus A7A266 w/o audio to replace my KT7A)
20 gig Western Digital 7200 rpm ata 66 Hardrive
What will I have to update besided Drivers? And do Windows NT drivers work with 2000?
Also what are some differences between 98 and 2000?
I want 2000 because of the stabilty and performance gain that I heard about.
Also I need Voodoo2 drivers for 2000 that will fix teh voodoo2+athlon conflict, the ones i found are for 98, or will I not have this problem in 2000?
Also do DOS programs work in 2000?
Any other incompatabilitys?
Thanks for the info.
BTW hers a pic of what the trident card scored in 3dmark2k1.
2000 wouldnt even run.

I think the best install guide, including setting up a RAID array, FAQ, etc. for W2K that I've seen, is here (http://www.huge.d2g.com/) at Sir Huge's site.
He uses an Iwill KK266-R board and I believe he dual-boots W2K and 98SE...a very good read for anyone interested in installing W2K.;)

Do a search for the voodoo 2 card. I havent looked lately but when I first upgraded people were having trouble with it in win2k. Win2k supports older video cards but some times not all the features so with your setup yo may not be able to play some of your games very well til you get your new video card. win2k has alot of the features of win98 but they are in different spots so a littel looking around is needed or asking questions here. some dos programs work some do not. win2k does not allow applications to have direct control of hardware/memory so there is no sound in dos programs and if a program needs real dos it will not run. Games like doom, doom2, hexen, duke nukum 3d run some games older then this do not. If you do any cd ripping like for mp3's ect. you will have to get aspi drivers win2k does not ship with them. Any other questions just ask.

If you look on the W2k CD or go to the M$ website, you will find the HCL (hardware compatibility list) this list will tell you what will and will not work... Here (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) is the link to the HCL on the M$ website, you want to select display in the drop down.
your DOS programs wont work W2k dosent have DOS,and some older programs have a few issues on W2k..other that that you shouldnt be any other compatibility issues..

The biggest thing is to make sure you have drivers for all your hardware before you launch into this.
There is VooDoo2 drivers out there, I used to run mine in 2k. I don't know where you will find them now, they used to be on 3DFX's website.

You said you're "getting" it from a friend. Does that mean you're buying the original CD, with manual, and unprinted license, or does that mean you're getting a copied CD, without a license?
Piracy is a serious issue, and should be dealt with harshly. Beware.
Its not a copy its the disk, manual, and license.......i belive anyway he said he would bring Windows 2000...so guess he would brinf me everything.
Thanks for the info guys, Im gonna have to get another hardrive if im gonna dual boot..20 gig just isnt big enough.
Man you guy's never cease to amaze me...I would like to personally thank Redduc900 for the site link for installing Windows 2k and [Oc]acaridans for the link to hardware compatability charts at Microsoft...You guy's are "da bomb":)

In a nutshell:
Prepare to re-install all of your apps, because there is no upgrading to 2k from 98. 99% of NT drivers will NOT work for 2k. Other than the GUI being similar, they are quite different OS's. Staibility gains, yes. Performance gains, probably not. I would think 2k has your V2 drivers since its an older card, shouldnt be a problem. As far as I know, true DOS programs wont run in 2k, but I could be wrong, I havet used one in years. There may be compatability issues, I've not had any personally but I learned long ago not to say NEVER. Just roll with the flow

Adaptecs burner programs will install/update ASPI drivers. Most all burner progs do, they just wont be the same written by adaptec. Since ASPI was created by Adaptec, its a good idea to use their drivers though.
Hmmm....
All I know is that from most of teh benches I have seen is that 2000 scores slightly higher than 98. But very little so...
Also does anybody know if the driver cd that comes with the Radeon cards have the 2000 drivers on them?
Thanks for the info again guyz.
Man I love this place...

the latest drivers that 3dfx did are still on what is left of their site http://www.3dfx.com./downloads.htm. There are 98 and 2k versions of drivers for most of the chipsets that 3dfx did. I've just installed win2k on a machine with a voodoo3 and it worked fine.

There was a site that some of the ex-employee's of 3dfx ran for a bit, until Nvidia, pretty much told them they couldn't run it anymore without getting into legal issues. So they had to take it down. There were beta drivers for just about all os's on it, free for download and distribution. They are however planning to put it up elsewhere where they can't be taken to court for supporting a product that is no longer theirs.

I must say that I am surpised at how smooth Win2000 runs...
It runs like its on NOS....Even on this puny athlon 550. It isnt puny anymore! It actualy sped up some of my apps...
Thanks guys...

it can be faster in some sense, but it's actually slower in benchmarks in most cases. I'll take the slower marks and stability over the faster marks and crashes anytime!
