im trying to network 2 computers together using ics.i formatted my hard drive, installed windows me and started adding cards one at a time i have two smc network cards but one the old one that came with my cable modem is recognized as a realtek it works and im able to get on the net but im having trouble networking could the wrong detection be the problem
If the card is letting you get on the net then it is working. Don't worry that it is detected as the wrong card as the detection goes by what chipset is on the nic. I have seen this happen quite a few times before and the cards always worked fine. Check your network configuration. Do you want to use netbui or tcp/ip for file sharring. Netbui may not be installed by default so you may need to do that. For tcp/ip make sure that each machine is assigned it's own ip address and that they are on the same subnet and workgroup. Also make sure that you have file and printer sharing enabled and that a drive is sharred, you should see a hand on the drive icon.

I had the exact same problem, I called tech support, they told me realtec was the chipset, not the card and not to worry about it.
All of my cards are detected as Realtek 8139s by Windows and is perfectly normal. It's just the generic chipset as everyone has stated.
It will do the same with generic Intel chipset cards as well.
