Greetings! :D
A while ago, my boyfriend (OLMI) let me have his old Chieftec case that everyone and their brother has (pictures to come). It was ok, but I didn't like it that much, even after I put in pink lights. I had to get a different one that I chose. After a while of looking around, I chose this one:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-119-035&depa=0
ISN'T IT BEAUTIFUL?!? My boyfriend recommended it to me, and I completely fell in love with it. The only problem was that it didn't come with an acrylic window, which I really wanted, because I like pretty lights. Cooler Master makes separately sold side panels with windows, but they only come tinted blue or green. This would be fine, but as you probably have guessed, my case is going to be black and yellow! :O Since I had already fallen in love with the case, though, I had to have it, which meant a little modding would have to be done.
With the help of my boyfriend, the following list was compiled of neato mods we want to do:
Acrylic window
LEDs
Stealthed drives
Yellow cathodes
PSU (sleeving and trimming wires)
Fan grills
Stealthed front USB audio thingy
General small improvements
I'm also putting in a new PSU I recently purchased from Newegg. It's a Sparkle FSP530-60GNA (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-103-489&depa=0) All other hardware going into the case is in my sig.
All of these mods must be done in the next couple of days because I am leaving for college.
SO STAY TUNED! :D
Cool, nice choice on the case. She shore is purty :D
I'm glad you decided to put in the work to do your own window.... it looks so much nicer than stock windows not to mention being unique.
Good Luck on the mods :)

I agree thats an awesome case. Those mods will sure make it nice. HAve fun while modding and post pictures when you are finished. Have fun @ college btw.
This is going to be a great mod job! On the window, are you guys going to do the raised version? that would look utterly cool!

whoa, there's girls here? ;)
Yeah, I've found more female overclockers in the last week than I have since I joined.
That brings the grand total of female oc'ers that I know to 3!!! :D
BTW, I know there are more of you guys (err, girls? :eh?: )than that, but I've only met 3 so far.

i would also recommend painting your PSU Black or yellow to go with the theme.
great idea, like how you chose black and yellow cause they are some of my favorite colers.

The new PSU (Sparkle FSP530-60GNA).
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0052_small.jpg
My dad's pneumatic nibbler. We will be using this to do the window mod.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0054_small.jpg
By itself, the pneumatic nibbler doesn't cut straight at all.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0059_small.jpg
With masking tape, clamps, and a ruler, you get a PERFECT line. :)
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0060_small.jpg
This is the L-shaped ruler we will be using to make a straight line across the whole case panel. Without a nice long metal ruler like this one, we would have to re-clamp a bunch of times.
That's all for tonight. I had meant to get this all up before 12, but I ended up running into hosting problems, and I am tired so fiddling with URLs took longer than I had thought it would.
More to come tomorrow after I get back from Sea World. :)
Heres a tip, i know you most likely wont be doing all of you modding on the bed, but the bed carries alot of static electricty and you could FUBAR your stuff, just a heads up!
BTW that pnuematic nibler is a great tool!
P.S. Indimint is a hottie! (sorry had to say it)

...No matter how much you slid your feet you cant shock anyone... :(
And why is it exactly that you would want to do that? Hmmm. :D
Nice theme, if you have the time, you could try a bezel mod or a special paintjob to enhance the theme...
OMG, give the bezel insect antenna's and a big happy smile! :D

You could even paint the Dodge Rumble Bee logo on it. It would look soo awesome, unless your non into cars or trucks, but I think it would still be cool.
Heres the logo btw.
nvm pics not working now...
Haha. That bee logo would be cool, but we don't have time for any other mods. I'm not sure we'll even get everything done as it is. Painting would take forever.
Right now we have a lot done, so I'll post pictures again tonight. This time, they'll be posted earlier I hope.

RUMBLE BEE!! That's very nice, but as Olmi said, I don't think there's enough time for any painting :(
Thanks for the tip about the bed :) I'm not doing anything up there that'll cause a problem, but I hadn't thought of that, and it's definitely important.
Thanks for the support guys :D:D

No Time to paint it? Are you having to mod and move? You can always get her built up, and in the mean time decide how or indeed even if you want to paint it. So in the near future you can knock it out with minimal hassle, just my .02. Nice Mod BTW, after my GF saw the Zelda mod, she has been after me to build something like that for her, lol.

I saw maybe prepair to paint it and like on vacation, Thanksgiving or Christmas paint it. I dunno, but you could try to do it another time.
Like the weekend perhaps? Especially at the beginning of classes when there isn't as much studying to do. I usually have enough time on the weekends to do mods to my case...although I haven't done as many lately b/c I get tired of taking my computer apart.
Never thought I'd say that :D

reply, if you like that rumble bee, im sure u can find a high quality decal to use. thats what a lot of the ones on the dodges are. just high quality decals. that woudl only take a couple minuntes.
well on the decals, to get the best results, you should use a clear coat over it, and that would only take a day! to dry and every thing!
SniperXX
08-26-04, 11:38 PM
You could still just do the decal and clearcoat it another time. Or you could just leave the decal that way you could remove it sometime if you want to.
@stikphysh-
Hey where can you get them? Do you know of any places? I would want on, lol.
you can get them at automotive paint shops, or you can google for them, i would think that you could find them at some Dodge enthusiats store or something!
Hehe, thanks for painting and decal advice. I don't know if IndiMint wants to do it, though. Here are some more pictures:
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0141.jpg
Sleeving! We used as little sleeving as possible because this kit doesn't come with much. The reason we didn't buy our own was because we wanted to get sleeving from Newegg to save money on shipping.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0142.jpg
Here are the front USB, firewire, and audio ports, nicely sleeved.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0143.jpg
Here I am, shaping a new wire mesh for the front of the case for more airflow, and a more aggressive look. The original grill is being used to get the right shape.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0144.jpg
The wire mesh will be made out of a gutter guard. It looks perfect, and was only 1.50 for enough to make three or four fan guards. It also is really easy to shape with hands if you don't mind a little pain later on.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0157.jpg
This is the new fan guard. It screws on PERFECTLY. This gutter guard is perfect for the Cooler Master Praetorian.
That's all for now except this teaser for the next update! :OOOOOO
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0151.jpg
roflmao, i like that last pic! hehe
that mesh looks awsome! i want to see it with the front bezel on!
i dont know what you are talking about with "little" sleaving! lol

So much drama in the last pic, lol.
Man thats alot of sleeving! I would like to sleeve my psu but it seems like it takes forever, lol. How hard is it to do? Pretty easy right?
I also like that grill. I cant wait to see it with the front of the case on. :)
She said shes going to college in her 1st post, lol.

I love that sleeving BTW, I was going to pick some up for my new project, how easy is it to sleeve the PSU? I am going to be using a TON, as I want a sano interior, but dont want to be working on that when I could be playing with my creation :p Looks good so far, and that last pick, LOL

Well actually, I came up with most of the mods. :)
Btw, did you just throw the heatshrink over the plugs, or did you like unsolder the PSU
You don't need to unsolder anything to sleeve your PSU. It's really easy. Just search around these forums for guides and you should be fine. IndiMint had never done it and she learned how to really fast.

for those of you who are asking about sleeving your cables, dont unsoldier from the psu. thats way too much work. buy a set of molex tools. remove the pins from the plugs. just make sure you get them all put back in the right places when you are finished. its actually a very simple mod, can just get confusing on the main power plug.

Also, if you don't need to sleeve your ATX power connectors, you won't need to purchase any molex tools. A very small flathead screwdriver will do the job if you have one.
stikphysh
08-27-04, 12:44 PM
you actually dont even need a molex tool for the ATX power connector... ive done it with striaghtened out staples... but it hurts your fingers lol. i forgot to mention the stickers... call up your local dodge dealer and ask for their parts department. they should definately be able to get them.
yea, i always wondered how people got the sleaving over the main power plug
That or use very large sleeving over the ATX plug
Does anyone know how much space there should be in between two hard drives so they can cool off?
the space of a hard drive i would say

Does anyone know how much space there should be in between two hard drives so they can cool off?
it depends on how cool you need to go. ive got them stacked in my case, but thats cuz its all the room i got. if theres a fan in front of them, a half inch will be plenty... if there are no fans, i would say go AT LEAST an inch. but the more the merrier. i also try to mount them so i have a gap big enough so that i dont have too much slack in my IDE cable. i think it looks better that way.
Ok, it's time to explain how we're going to be doing the window mod. First, we will be drilling four holes like this:
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/panel1.JPG
Then, we will use a ruler to guide the pneumatic nibbler from one corner to the other, like this:
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/panel2.JPG
The result of this will be a nice looking hole for a window. The four holes we drilled will make perfect looking rounded edges, like this:
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/panel3.JPG
That's about it for cutting the case panel. Here are some pictures of us making the holes. Yes, my dad did all of the work. He's the best at it, and he prefers to be the one to use his tools. :D
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0053.jpg
Here is my dad with the paneumatic nibbler. :)
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0145.jpg
If you haven't figured it out yet, the nibbler will touch the ruler, so that it makes a perfect line. Here's my dad measuring the distance between the ruler and where the nibbler made its cut. We needed to know this so that the cut the nibbler made would meet up perfectly with the four holes.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0147.jpg
Here's my dad figuring out where to drill the holes.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0148.jpg
Drill press!
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0153.jpg
A new hole!
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0154.jpg
Metal bits!
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0155.jpg
Jagged edges!
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0156.jpg
Way better edges after using the tool in the picture. I don't know what it's called, but I can find out if anyone wants to know.
Ok, so I know maybe you had seen the teaser picture and were expecting something a bit more dramatic. The truth is, nothing bad happened. IndiMint was just really scared something MIGHT happen, but the drilling went fine. The case panel made a lot of racket while being drilled, but that's about it.
More pictures coming sooooooon! Maybe even a picture of the new aggressive fan guard! :O
Oh, and yes, I have a lot of the work done already, I'm just releasing the photos really slowly to tease you. :p

i believe that tool is called a hand rheem or something like that. its for rheeming the inside of pipes after you cut them to get rid of the jaggies that end up inside it.
Also, whats a "sano interior"? I havent heard of that before? :eh?:
Sano is a hot rod term, from sanitary. Sano=Clean/Organized.

Here's the front. Notice the star she added. It's a bandaid.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0044.jpg
Here's the back. You can see our ghetto fan grill mod. There was a really nice increase in air flow. It's also missing a motherboard back panel thingy and two PCI slot covers. :D
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0046.jpg
A 3.5" drive bay cover is missing, and the wire to the switch to the cathode switch wouldn't reach the back of the case, so we had to leave it hanging. LLOOOLlL. Also, note the beige Creative dvd-rom :/
Now, for the modding pictures you've been waiting for:

Good luck on the road with her and the computers...

We're going for the two tone effect. The silver of the fan grill looks really nice with the aluminum inside.

Well, the theme is bumble bee, so I want yellow everything. We bought yellow LEDs, though, and they look really orange (like street lights almost). I don't think orange would look that great in front, so I'm giving thought to some other colors (olmi suggested white). Do they just not make really yellow LEDs? I got mine at Radio Shack and they were clearly labled yellow :(

If you plan to use a 9 volt battery, you better be prepared to buy every LED you 'test' (more of burn out).
Hehe. We don't really want to go out testing every LED possible. Does anyone know where to get a truly yellow LED?
BTW, you can use one of those little round 3v batteries to test LEDs.

Just as a warning, you can't do that to EVERY LED out there... Mainly just blue and whites I think. I just looked on eBay for yellow LEDs.. They have a max forward voltage of 2.4 volts... I tried using 2 AA's to test my new red LEDs that used 2.4 volts max.... Just say I'm short a LED now.
That's weird... Are you sure you have the anode and cathode hooked up correctly? I didn't know you could ruin LEDs like that.

Yep, long side is the anode, short side is the cathode, bla bla... I think if I did hook it up backwards, it would be able to take more volts than 3 before it burnt out.
YAY ANOTHER UPDATE! :O
Thanks for all your patience with our laziness. :)
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0082.jpg
Here's another picture of the old case that I forgot to include in the previous update.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0083.jpg
We decided to cut off the old power connectors that come with PSUs still. Here are the severed wires.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0051.jpg
We used some really sticky tape to make sure nothing would short. We didn't have any electrical tape. This was the next best thing.
NOW IT'S TIME TO MAKE THE WINDOW!
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0056.jpg
First, we covered everything with masking tape to prevent scratches.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0060.jpg
We used our drill press and a manual nibbler to make room for our pneumatic nibbler to start its work. :)
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0061.jpg
We looked at how much space there was between the pneumatic nibbler's cut and the ruler. It was 6/32 in.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0063.jpg
Here's the first cut! VERY STRAIGHT, EH? It went very well, and the ruler stayed in place thanks to our super duper clamps.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0064.jpg
Here's a better look at the first cut. It looks a little beat up, but we filed down all the rough parts. There weren't any scratches on the front.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0066.jpg
Almost done! We enlarged the hole on the bottom left a bit because we needed to get the pneumatic nibbler out.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0067.jpg
All done! YAYYYYYYYYYYYYyyyyyy
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0069.jpg
Looks really nice on the case. No acrylic there, yet.
HARD DRIVE MOUNTING! :O
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0070.jpg
There wasn't enough space for both hard drives if we wanted to put them in backwards, so I filed a bit.
http://www.houseoffinland.org/indi_case/IMG_0071.jpg
The filing wasn't adequate for cooling, so we decided to drill new holes a bit higher. Here I am, lining up the drill.
That's all for now. :) More coming soooooooon!
I love the method for the window, it is VERY well done, when are you going to put the window in?

I agree the window does look very professional. I was wondering how one of those nibblers would work. I hate the manual nibbers, ahh bad memorys, lol. I may now pick up a pnumatic (sp?) nibbler.

I bought two more LEDs from xoxide.com, but they were also orange. Since they messed up lots of other things in the order, they're sending two additional yellow LEDs in case they sent orange ones by accident.
Silent Frog here on the forums did a really neato mod with a ton of yellow LEDs (in the Case Mod Gallery) and he told me that his LEDs had yellow plastic unlike the clear ones that I've been buying, so I'm looking for ones like that.
The computer is already up and running even though we haven't finished the whole mod. OLMI just needs to get off his lazy bum to post some pictures. :D
Sorry we're lagging. :) indimint has decided to stay here instead of going off to college, so there is no dead line, and we're being lazy. Here's the only new picture I have because the camera isn't in my hands right now:

Also, could this thread be put into the new neato project log section? :D
