I've heard alot about how this OS is suppose to be impossible to run on more than one computer etc.
Exactly kind of protection does it have. Does it have something that MAKES you register over the net or something?

What it basically does is take a snap shot of your computer cpu, mobo hardrive, etc... then gives it a unique number that you have to register over the net. If you try to put it on another machine it will have a different number and when you try to register it Microsoft will know that its a different computer and wont let you activate it.

What if you register it?

You 'have' to register the software to obtain your 'activation' code
I've heard tell that if you DON'T register XP, it completely hoses your system up. But I've not seen anyone try it. Everyone was too excited about playing with WPA .
I've heard thhat you get 50 reboots and if you don't register it then it will refuse to boot anymore.
Would it work if you have 2 exact computers. Like same parts and stuff
Yes, there are unique identifiers on ethernet cards call MAC addresses contain a BIA (burned in address) from the manufacturer. Theoretically they are globally unique.

Hey Rob I know that you have a disclaimer there at the end of your post ;) . But this post is really not necessary. As post of these types put the forum in danger. I for one would hate to lose this great resource because somebody couldn't show some restraint and not stay away from making posts like this. If you want to talk about these things with others then please do it with them through your email or by some other means then the forum.

penguinfreak this is really the most disturbing part about xp. from the articles I have read xp will allow you to upgrade 4 parts (was the last number I heard) within 6 months if you do more you will have to call Microsoft to get it reactivated. After the 6 months it will reset itself and you will be able to change up to 4 more things.
This my friend is why there is all the controversy surrounding xp especially by people like us.

I think that the only version of XP not to have the "activation" scheme will be the corporate editions. MS is supposedly putting the activation in all of it's new software by Feb, 2002.
