Router questions

First off, what router do you recommend?

If I had my dsl modem hooked up to my router and all my computers also hooked up to it, i would be able to share internet connection right? now would i have to install the login software (the softaware that connects me to the internet) on all the the computers? and how would i set up all the computers so they would recieve internet accsess?

If you choose a Linksys router, the router will log in and keep an open connection (when properly configured). It'll also run a DHCP server, so when you start up any computers you have they will automatically and immediately have access to the internet, without a dialup program (b/c the router is holding the connection open)

The only downside is that you will be behind a firewall. And if you plan to run a server, you have to go in and map the ports.

well thats what I was looking for :)

I proly won't be running a server but if I do would that be hard to do? (map the ports)

All routers nowadays come with a built control panel that you connect by typing in an IP in a browser window, from there you can congifure ports and mapping as well as block ports and some other such things. You can also set up your router for remote administration as well.

The best part about a router is this, it allows multiple computers to connect to the net at one time without relying on one for the connection i.e. Internet connection sharing =)

you could always setup a proxy server im using an old P 100 that was in my closet i thought id make use of it. all i did was stick 2 NICs in it and set it up and i could share connections it is more secure and works great i just leave it on all the time. So if you have an old computer sitting around you could make good use of it for this.
