4.8s = LAME

Hello people, I had the 4.9 betas and they worked awsome. I went to ati's website and started downloading the 4.8s. I installed and everything was going smoothly till I started 3Dmarking. My 3Dmark score went down to 6032 insead of my 7192 :(. My CPU mark went down to 650 instead of 862. Personally, those drivers were lame for me, how about you guys?

compared to the 4.7, performance in benchmarks (aqua,3d01,3d03) staid the same, but Far Cry was much smoother and actually ran on higher settings than with 4.7. So I'm very content at the mo (at least compared to the 4.7s). Card is 9800 XT.

Well, downgrading drivers is always an ugly deal, and you probably already know the drill on how you should go about THOROUGLY cleaning out the old drivers before installing any new (old?) ones.

Just curious, why did you downgrade? If the 4.9 Betas were awesome, why did you want to downgrade?

I downgraded because I was curious to try the official version of the driver. Btw, I did clean out my drivers with driver cleaner 3. I wasn't very happy with these drivers consitering it lowered my 3Dmark scores so bad. Oh well, looking foward to the 5.0s :).

5.0s won't be out till next year. The next driver release after 4.9 will be 4.10

there will never be a 5.0.the numbering scheme goes the last number of the year dot the number of release. i.e.4.8=2004release8

The 4.9 Beta's don't fix the problem in Far Cry with the wierd colours on the trees on the level where you have to destroy the radar masts.

I haven't tried the 4.8's yet, but after trying the 4.9 beta hotfix drivers for Doom3 , I'm considering going back to 4.7. @ 4.7, my oc on my card seemed a lot more stable, and I could actually achieve a higher stable oc... all the way up to 438/385 on my 9800 pro...

so extreme, have you reinstalled the 4.9 betas? Did your scores go back up to what they were?

The 4.9s are a lot better. My 3Dmarks went down the crapper but my gaming was the same with the 4.8s. I had the 4.9 betas before but my I wanted to try the "official" release of the 4.8s. I thought, what do I have to lose? I installed and I instantly started 3Dmarking (Believe me, i unistalled the 4.9's before I installed the 4.8's) I got a really low score for my setup and was very disappointed! Anyways, im planning to stick with the 4.9s until something better comes out.
