It's a pentium 4 rated at 1.6 ghz, It was bought on summer '01. The mobo is 400mhz FSB(max), as well as the CPU. I know I have to go onto the BIOS by pressing s F10 at startup, but I don't know what to do from there. Any help will be much apreciatted.

You are probably limited by a lot of things in your setup, so pleeeaaase take the time to start reading HERE (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=51672) first!

umm read it and found nothing but some discussion. What I'am asking is just what to do after you get into the BIOS. Yes I know the mobo is important, but is there a way to overclock the microprocessor only?

If you specify what brand and type of mobo you have we might be able to help you out any further. If you look at the kid's rig in my signature you'll see I have i similar system. I was able to flash the OC-unfriendly OEM P4B-LA HP BIOS to a regular P4B-MX BIOS (the board actually is a P4B-MX in a special OEM version essentially) Still I'm not able to change the CPU speed cuz this OEM -LA version is missing a jumper block so the FSB options are greyed out in BIOS, duh! I do have all the other advanced setup candy activated now so I could tweak the system to the max.

All overclocking is done through the motherboard. Each mobo is different. Having to use F10 to get into the BIOS tells me right there that it's not one of the better overclockable mobos. Some mobos do not even allow overclocking. We need to which mobo you have before we can give you specific info. But, basically, you need to raise the FSB (or frequency). Sometimes you need to set the CPU clock speed to "user define" first. I suspect this is an OEM computer that won't O/C. Also, which 1.6 is this? Northwood or Willamette?

I don't know wether it's a northwood or willamete, but I do have the info on the mobo-Board: Intel Corporation D850GB AAA60568-900. What do you think I can do with it. BTW went in the bios and found no option for overclocking, darn,.

If I'm not mistaken that's an original Intel RDRAM board so you can forget about OCing through BIOS or jumpers. The only possibility left MIGHT be software OCing in Windows. Do a websearch for software overclocking programs and see if you can find one supporting your mainboard...

Lancelot is correct, Intel brand mobos don't allow overclocking. You might try downloading a program called softFSB. If that don't work, then you are out of luck. To see which CPU you have, download and run a program called CPU-Z.

If you bought it in the summer of 2001 then it's most likely a willamete, I also own a 1.6Ghz willy, the most I can get out of her is 1.7Ghz, after that problems start, at 1.8Ghz my onboard sound quits, at 1.9Ghz she won't always boot.

Yeh I just found out it's a crappy williamete, I guess I'll buy a 478pin adapter and a Pentium 4 2.6 northwood and I'll be swingin'

for the hassel of an adapter, and for the sake of your OC (not gonna happen thru the adapter AFAIK) you'd be better served by getting some cheap ddr400, a AI7 from abit, and perhaps a celeron D proc at 2.4. you'll get a great OC and a new rig that is fairly upgradeable down the line.
