I just read @Toms that AMD is planing to come up with the good ole PR rating and start branding their chips in style "MODEL1600" for 1.4Ghz Athlon etc. This because average consumer doesnt realise that the Mhz dont mean everything.

Now AMD is in great need of some great PR to sell their chips. So I tought mayby we could put our creative minds into use and think up some good PR for AMD. Then mayby some "legitemate" person (skip?) could mail AMD to check on our ideas...

Now in general, the PR rating is bad idea. So we need think quickly!

The Hammer line can use its "64-bit CPU" for sales, but what could Tbird use? They could atleast use something like MIPS or FLOPS etc. that would, a. be realistic and reproducable and b. force the client to learn what this means.

Horry my friends! Bring me all the children U can find! ... err... nevermind :)

how 'bout...

Hi my name is Joe, and my Anti-Intel is AMD.

Or

Just say NO to intel.
Something the kids can relate to - they are our tomorrow.

Hey great idea! i've been persuading my friends to go AMD for years now, its easy i just tell em, its cheaper and its faster for current software, which is true! it's really easy in the UK too, as we have a thing about supporting the underdog!

Just trying to think of a way AMD could demonstrate just how fast their CPU's are in a way that your average person would understand....

came up with an amusing idea for adverts for the claw and sledge hammer, just a bloke with an AMD t-shirt a BIG hammer, and a line of Intel processors.... mwuhahahahahaha

Yeah! But first he would have to introduce us to the green hammer: "This here is the current state of the art CPU, the AMD clawHammer!", "Now just look whatkind of devastation it brings on its competitorS!", then with a mean scream he would smash and jump on the *ntel chips. :):):)

Really... A real campaign cant bash competiting products. And telling people the trouth is good, but there just isnt enough us preachers.

well if they didnt name any names..... its all fine, they compare washing powders like that and stuff.... man im really getting into this idea.... gonna make me a vid of it..... hey AMD could have green men to counter intels blue men.... could have like a huge fight between em..... intels blue with funny plastic musical pipes, and AMD green with massive great big green hammers...... i think the public can understand that concept :p

Wait wait first things first we are getting paid for this right?

How about: Picture this a the sky grows dark, thunder and lightning roar from the sky. The thunder and and lightning strike a factory and it explodes all that's left is a sign that has IN.. and Inside. For the end of the commercial a thunderbird drops down and grins and flys off, and on it's tail it say "AMD Thunderbird 1400" and a logo smashes the sceen "Powered by DDR Memory"
Finally they pull out the screen and the whole thing turns out to be a animation on a computer. On the computer a BIG logo that says "Powered By AMD THUNDERBIRD 1400 WITH DDR Memory" "Graphix Chip BY ATI R200"
(sorry can't spell well right now and the grammar ain't good either) What do u guys think?

Or they can do what they did when they tried to sell the K6-2 put small advertising amflites with graphs comparing it to Intel chips with faster clock speeds and slogans and the promise that the chip is compatble with windows next to the Intel chips. Hey it got me to buy it.

great ideas! I like the pic where it says: AMD athlon , whoop ass inside, with a circle thing around it like intel.

you could also have that cartoon where roadrunner speeds pass the coyota (sorry don't know the names, i don't watch it) roadruner holding a tbird sighn and cooyate holding a p4 sigh, bet the kids could relate to that ;)

It gets worse apparently they are considering stopping the Athlon 4 name and calling it the AthlonXP

How about they get 4 guys that paint themselves green. Then the AMD green guys can go beat the crap out of the Intel Pentium blue guys.

How about:

Intel Inside - Idiot outside

Amd Inside - Genius outside

If that doesn't work, have the green AMD guys beat the crap out the blue Intel guys, I kinda like that one.

nothing more nothing less - it says it all!

ok basically its not on to compare AMD products to intel, cos it makes intel look bad, how about this:

"we'd show you just how good our processors are, but then we'd be being unfair to Intel!"

minoukat
08-29-01, 05:27 PM
What do you think of this one :
It all begins with the amd Athlon sign rising in the air, and it goes stick itself on the computer case. Then, you see the motherboard and processor with an intel chip (not mensionned), and a socket a Athlon mobo flying in the case, followed by the cpu falling into the socket. at the end, you'll see some benchmarks comparing AMD and INtels, like for the K6-2 !

BTW, what does PR mean ?

eobard
08-29-01, 05:51 PM
First, pentium ratings are poison. Remember the Cyrix 6x86's and MII's with their PR's? Look what it did for (to?) Cyrix! AMD could have easily collapsed too when they released the K5 with it's pentium rating system. So regardless of any other choices they really need to avoid going back to the PR system!

Second, some damned idiot on "Cable Pulse 24" (Ontario people know the tv channel I'm talking about) just advised a person who sent in an email to their tech program "home page" that the Pentium 4 was a vastly superior product to the top of the line Thunderbirds and that Thunderbirds were only the equal to the pentium 3 and that AMD had no good chips to compare to the pentium 4 on the horizon! This twit then went on to say that AMD was a company that plays follow the leader behind Intel, reverse engineering Intel chips to make their own. I'll admit this was true in the 486 days but it's been a long time since then! What AMD needs is compotent, unbiased "experts" to take to the airwaves instead of twits and morons. This guy must have gotten his training at radio crap or future shop. The next email he responded to was from someone with a Cyrix MII PR300 who had a question about a memory upgrade. He went on to declare that the person meant that he had a Pentium 2 because Cyrix didn't make chips that ran that fast! Of course they didn't, its a frickin' "Pentium Equivalent Rating"! I hope to god no one took his advice as gospel, anyone who did is probably out buying incompatible hardware right now.

Anyone who wants to help level the playing field for AMD might want to go to www.pulse24.com and then head to the "Home Page" section and then fire off an angry letter regarding their so-called expert giving misleading advise about AMD. How's about EVERYONE with an AMD chip here do it, if they get several hundred emails from across the globe that might make them sit up and pay attention and get a compotent professional instead of an "expert". Then there'll be one less station giving out bad info about AMD.

The time for talk is gone my brothers, this is the time for action! Viva la revelution!!!

I don't think we can go as far as actually scripting advertisements(although the lightning striking the factory sounded good, it's too much like the old pepsi vs coke war-you either like coke or pepsi! There's no changing people's opinion like that).

The main problem is, like someone mentioned, AMD needs to make a name for itself. Why do you think Intel has stuck with the 'Pentium' name for so long?! The stupid consumer who heard the word Pentium 6 years ago will most likely buy a Pentium. The fact that AMD is far cheaper doesn't seem to be helping, either, because the top end of the market people just assume that it's lesser quality and speed because it's less than half the price for the actual chip. For some reason large manufactorers are still opting for the Pentium 4 making the cheapest one around $1000, while they could be making Duron systems that cost $250! Sure, the slowest P4 is faster than the fastest Duron, but four times faster? Not a chance.

What AMD needs to do is somehow jump ahead of Intel, altogether. I think Intel realizes this, and so they've just kept clocking higher and higher without care to cost. AMD has been getting cheaper and cheaper but without significant clock speed increase.

For now, I think all we can do is point out to those who we know and are around that buying an AMD system will save them a lot of money for the same if not better performance levels. Even though it's not going to initially spur a massive sweep of the market it will, over time, accumulate-and thus we've helped out AMD.

As much as I love AMD, AMD needs to do something. That something is release a new processor. One that completely demolishes anything that intel can release.

To be fair, AMD is still sitting pretty from a performance standpoint, but even Palomino will be just nudging past whatever Intel can release.

AMD, needs a knockout processor that leaves no doubt as to its supremacy. Only then, will OEMs give it the consideration it deserves.

As long as the race is close (even if intel is behind) OEMs and magazines will favor intel. That's just the nature of the beast.

I think AMD should release some 2.0Ghz Athlons in limited quantity & price them $75-100 cheaper than the P4 2.0Ghz.

I don't think the current Thunderbird or even the Palomino core could scale up to 2.0ghz. Don't get me wrong, I own a Thunderbird, so I'm definitely pro-AMD. But if we did get a 2.0ghz Athlon, then I think we'd have Intel tied up until they hit that "10ghz" mark they're planning on in 3 years time.

I just hope to god that Intel doesnt go crazy and ramp up the MHz to 3GHz in like 5 months. The said thing is, they have a 3GHz Pentium 4 Northwood ready to ship! They even overclocked it to 3.5GHz. It must scare AMD to know this.

I predict that the Northwood core will go till at least 4GHz since thats what all socket 478 boards support officially.

AMD on the other hand will fight back! :D They got Theroughbred which features .13micron technology and a major die shrink. I heard that a 2GHz AMD Theroughbred produces the same amount of heat as a 750MHz T-bird, not to shabby.

AMD Roadmap:
Palomino~
1.53GHz, 1.6GHz, 1.73GHz, 1.8GHz, 1.86GHz & 1.93GHz.

Theroughbred~
(2.0GHz, 2.13GHz+ on 266fsb) (2.0GHz, 2.16GHz, 2.33GHz, 2.5GHz+ on 333fsb).

Barton & Clawhammer~
Barton is supposed to have a 333fsb only and Clawhammer is supposed to have a 64-bit 533MHz Quad 133MHz pumped bus. Barton also adds 512KB of cache to the Athlon processor giving a total of 896KB. The Clawhammer will indeed have 1MB of cache. There is still alot of AMD lovin to go around folks!

thats about the best i can do, I have a question thou, is there gonna be a 200fsb Palomino?

Valid

I thought I read somewhere that there wasn't going to be a 200mhz FSB Palomino. I can't remember where, but I'll look for a link.

AtomicGuY
08-30-01, 12:04 AM
That would hurt amd's sales for motherboards that dont support 266bus. They need to show there strength and countinue to offer both flavours of FSB support to the PC industry.

This has been one of the biggest strengths to AMD, there upgradability is simply the best. If AMD countinues the 200MHz FSB with Palomino, there will be alot of happy campers with older mother boards. Specially people who buy boards with KT133E for value.

Hmmm, mayby just an add campaign would do it. Ive seen several times Intel's adds on TV, but never AMD. Just something to get people ask about it. Mayby the average sales person will tell the truth. And some subtle way to hint about the Mhz/power difference. Like "faster than you think" or "faster than it looks". Or mayby throw in some MIPS or sometin benchdata to get people really ask about it. Mayby then those "average" users will look up some reviews in mags etc. and find the truth. And mayby they would even get exited about it, I know how exited I am when I find something that is cheaper and better. That's like the holy grail. Yes, a campaign about prize/performance.
Campaign where average people are "interviewed" and they say

"- Its the fastest PC in the neibourhood, and I only paid $1000 for it."
"- Faster than it looks - AMD Athlon/Duron".

From what I've seen its usually the guy in second place trying to play catch up who runs the most comercials. Always trying to take a bite out of the champ. Perhaps its good that AMD isn't salivating and foaming at the mouth on the public airwaves about their products. Still, a bit of publicity couldn't help. I like the old shampoo comercial idea, you know I'll tell 2 friends and they'll tell 2 friends, and so on, and so on... I think we all need to fight as individuals to prevent PR's from coming back and to make sure that the general public is aware of the true capability of AMD. Start firing those emails people!

EXACTLY!!! AMD WHO? THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING. THE BEST ADVERTISING I HAVE SEEN IS IN THE BEST BUY CATALOGE. NOW THAT IS BAD PR. THEY COMPLAIN THAT COSTOMERS ARE STUPID WITH OUT EVEN INTRODUCING THEMSELFS. MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT INTEL HAS COMPETITION. AMD SHOULD AT LEAST SAY HI TO THEIR PUBLIC. THEY DON'T HAVE TO TRY AND PROVE PERFOMANCE THEIR POWER. LORD KNOWS INTEL DOESN'T. JUST DO SOMTHING, ANYTHING!!!!

I really dont like this PR rating thingy, cos AMD are gonna end up being sued or something. as to why intel stuck with pentium, i heard that the pentium pro (allegedly the 1st 686) was gonna be called sexium.... now that is bound to make school kids fall about laughing! so they stuck with pentium...

as i've said before i advise all my friends to buy AMD. Now i'm gonna try to get them to advise people they know to do so too...

How about we all go hang around in computer shops etc, and talk to people who look like they may be buying a PC.... let em know the difference between intel and AMD etc...
