View Full Version : Mixing AC II with Epoxy = Thermal Epoxy?

If I were to mix equal parts Arctic Silver II with a general use (though name brand) epoxy, would that make it "thermal epoxy", or just epoxy impregnated with AC II?

Is 50% each the optimal mixture? I want to attach RAMsinks, but I'm not about to go blow $14 on Arctic Silver epoxy, and wait 2 weeks to get it, when I can go down to the Depot and pick up some epoxy for $4 today, and mix it with my AC II (That is, of course, if this is a viable option).

Is epoxy counter-heat-transmissive (I made up another word!)?

Will it interfere with the AC II enough to warrant use of a different adhesive, like JB Weld?

Is JB Weld only for metal?

I'm a little skiddish to use Krazy Glue on the corners of the RAM chips, and use AC II in the center, because Krazy Glue is designed to flow into tiny crevices, and I don't want that crap fogging up my PCB and contacts (Not to mention possibly shorting something out!)

Check out the Arctic Silver web site they talk about mixing AS epoxy with AS grease, maybe that would work? I would also suggest emailingb them this question, it's worth a shot.

others have told me this works but I haven't done it yet. also mix more AS2 in and you can take it off easier later on.

JB Weld is epoxy with steel particles. Arctic Silver Epoxy is epoxy with Arctic Silvers spiffy "micronized silver particles." While mixing Arctic Silver thermal grease in with epoxy would probably improve the thermal transfer, it will not be as effecient as Arctic Silver Epoxy. The primary reason for mixing Arctic Silver thermal grease with Arctic Silver Epoxy is to reduce the bond strength should you ever want to seperate the objects joined.
