Last night I heard a loud noise, looking down the hall I saw a flash of light come from my computer room. Walked in and the smell of burning electronics was overwhelming. I was running Prime95 on it and had increased the vcore to 2.15 ~an hour before this. The smell was coming from my PSU (Cool Max CT-400EE), it was hot as hell when I pulled it out. I yanked an Antec 300watt PS out of my old PC so see if anything else was cooked. Luckily all my other components seem to be fine.
Now I’m just trying to figure out what happened and prevent it from happening again… did one or both fans stop working which caused it to overheat and then blowup? The PSU was about 18months old.
Anyone have any theories?

probably overloaded, too many amps drawn on some line
Time for a new PSU......Were the board/cpu/card etc still working properly?
When shopping for a new one, better to spend the extra $ and get one that supports overvoltage and overcurrent protection. Few PS have this, most just have one or the other. Read the specs closely before making up your mind.

2.15 VCORE?!?!?!?!? I think the loud noise you heard was your processor ;). Anyways, Im glad to here your components are ok. You might consiter getting a 450W Antec or something. Antecs seem popular because rarely they have problems! Im ordering a Antec 550W Today, it feels good to have another PSU. DONT GET AN ALLIED, THEY SUCK!

Just goes to show how important a quality PSU really is, never skimp on a good PSU, Antec, or Sparkle all the way....

With that high of a vcore I'm not surprised. Like has been mentioned get a quality PSU and be thankful thats all you've lost. If you plan on running those high v in the future it may be a good idea to go with dual psu's. I have to assume you are running WC and those pumps can draw alot of amps.
God Luck in your search for the ultimate OC.

You are really lucky your PSU didn't take something else with it when it died. Like everyone already said don't skimp on the PSU and give OCZ and PCP&C a look as well.

Just got back from the local computer show...
Picked up an Ultra X-Connect 500watt PS.
Short Circuit Protection - In-rush Current Protection - Thermal Overload Protection
Hopefully this one won't blow up :) I love the easy cable management and they glow.
I also grabbed a 2500+ Moblie Barton for cheap.
Thx for the replies, I guess I underestimated the power of a power supply or their lack of... Yes I'm really lucky nothing else got damaged.
