I know people usually ignor these, but i have found so much mixed information doing searches, all with out any good justification or reason...

I bent 3 pins on my 2.8E slightly when doing a favor for a friend and now i need a new CPU.
I have had a 2.6C
Sold that for a 2.8E
What should i get for a replacement? I didn't find the 2.8E to run hot at all...about 5-10C hotter then my 2.6C
performance seemed close to the same though.

Doing a seach i find people saying the northwoods are going out, and people are calling them "old tech"....
....while others are saying the new "presshots" are junk and swear by the old northwoods.

NOW, there the new socket "T" chips....Looking into the future, seems like i should invest in something more upgradeble to the new stuff coming out. but in my searches It seems people hate these??? aparently they require all new hardware???

Then there is the amd 64 bit stuff

To many choices. I have an P4P800 mobo, and i like it alot, but thinking maybe its time to up grade...my BH6 needs more volts...if i upgrade, prolly should go to the 775 i guess

Im a mess lol, any help apreciated

If you're looking more long term, LGA775 will be the platform Intel releases their 64-bit processors on. Northwoods are very well optimized chips as they've been out for a while. Prescott's have the extra cache, great for gaming. Stick with Intel and you can't go wrong.

i'd recommend one of the abit socket t(lga 775) boards, but then again im extremely partial to abit stuff, never had it go bad. well go with socket t anyway

I've bent pins before and was able to straighten them. Using a magnifying glass helps.

Stick with Intel and you can't go wrong. give him reasons why !!! he can easily go wrong if the Intel option does not stand up.....

why would the intel option not "stand up"?

to the original query, you could make do with the board you've got, and say a 3.0c. if you like that board, and all you really need is more vdimm, check out the OCZ vdimm booster.

Things people forget:

1) To adopt (steal, really) the K8 technologies that make the AMD Athlon64s/Opterons/FXen what they are, a new socket and motherboard will be required. A big part of the A64 performance is actually from the onboard memory controllers and the discrete channels for memory and perhipheral access. I do not think that Intel will release the 64 bit technologies for Socket T. If they DO indeed, I think it a bad engineering decision.
2) The "EM" in "EM64T" stands for enhanced/extended memory and is not lengthening of the GPRs to 64 bits. I don't think Intel will be quick at all to adopt new technologies in regards to 64-bits, K8-style innovations, ..., but will instead adopt the Pentium M as the desktop microprocessor once Mega-hurts mania fades.

if FSBuster's pressie at 4.93 24/7 (might be 4.8 24/7) is any indication "Mega-hurts mania" is going to be around for a while. :D
