The 9700np has 256-bit memory whereas the 9600xt has 128-bit. Makes a difference.

If you're a gambling man then go with the 9700np, you might be able to flash it to a pro....

9600xt=4000-4500 3dmarks, 9700np=4500-5000 3dmarks.

When you turn up the resolutions realy high the difference gets bigger.
