View Full Version : Where to get a big a$$ fan?
I'm in search of a good 12" (or so) fan for pushing air through 2 (maybe 3) heatercores. I want to place the heatercores (which are about 12"x6") side-by-side and use a single fan to cool them (or perhaps 2 fans in a push/pull config).
I've checked several dept. stores for window fans, etc. but everything I've seen is either too cheaply made, too loud, or has the motor sticking too far out on one side of the fan to make it useable. Basically what I'm looking for is a large version of a case fan.
Any ideas where I may find one? Anybody try this before?

I'm not sure they make case fans that big. Like you said it'll be loud, bulky and the like.

I'm in the process of ironing out the bugs in a dual bonneville HC setup. I have a 10" cooling fan that i had laying around. It is loud at full speed like you said. The temps between high and low speed only varies 2C. These are some fans, that I'm considering using as a replacement. I'm not sure about the noise levels. I am going to call before I purchased them to find out.

to cut down on noise, i'd suggest getting a blower like the one in my radbox. i got mine from the junkyard for $10.

True, blowers rock for heatercores. Especially in a box so you can have them sucking in through the rad, and exhausting out the wall of the box.
But just once, wouldn't you like to do this?

So blowers are generally quieter than fans?
On a side note, fhanderson, are you running your cores in series or parallel? I figure paralell would be better for flow, and also to keep the input temp on both rads as high as possible, but I haven't tries either yet...

no
but they build more static pressure

Ok well I checked the Big Ass fan company (http://www.bigassfans.com/) but these may be too big for your needs. :D
Seriously I have an 1100 CFM fan that is made by EBM it puts out an insane amount of air.
Here are the specs on it.
EBM W2E250 FAN PDF file (http://www.ebmpapst.us/allpdfs/W2E250%2EPDF)
This is where I bought it from.
McMaster Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/)
The part number is 1976K27 for 115VAC.
Price over $200.00 but I too couldn't find anything even close to it anywhere else. The static pressure it can handle is fantastic, which means that it is suited for you type of application where as an ordinary desk fan will just burn out. Oh yeah one more thing it is loud as hell but I love it. :D

I'm running the HCs in a series with a Mag 3 pump and DD RBX waterblock. The difference between Low which is quieter than my case fans and High which is loud but not irritating is only 2C. The AS is starting to set and the temps have dropped a couple of degrees. Running prime 95, the highest reading with MBM is 41C with the fan on low, it drops to 39C with the fan on high. This is with the Abit IS7 temp sensors which can report 6-10C higher. I would say the temps are in the low to mid 30s under load. I think this setup still needs some tweaking but overall, I'm think its OK. I thought the fan running at high speed would have more of an impact on the temps. Later, I might convert the HCs to single pass to see if that helps. I am a little concerned that the dual cores and tubing length might be to much for the mag 3.
