View Full Version : Looking for a good (fairly) quiet power supply

I've been doing some reading and a bit of research, as I would kind of like to do a system overhaul. At this point, I would like to add a RAID 0 array into my system and use my current 120gb drive as a backup. I don't think my current PSU would be up to the task, though, as it's a 360w Enlight. Although it sounds cheapo, it's actually a very good PSU for the $40 I paid. Here's my current system:

Leadtek K8N mobo
Sempron 3100+ @ 2.47ghz - 1.6v
1gb PC3200 DDR @ 225mhz
CD burner
DVD-ROM drive
floppy
120gb HDD
LAN card
USB card
Sound Blaster Live!
Leadtek Winfast TV2000XP

I change graphics cards pretty frequently, but I'll be running a GeforceFX 5700 Ultra for a while. My next card will likely be an X800, but that'll be a few months from now. I have been running a Voodoo3 2000 PCI card for my second monitor, but I'm probably going to switch back to just a single card before long.

Anyway, I'm looking for a pretty quiet PSU that can power all of the above plus two 7200rpm SATA drives in RAID 0. As I said, noise is a big consideration, but I also must have a very solid PSU. I would prefer to not pay over $100, but I have looking at the Antec Neopower PSU and the OCZ Powerstreams, although I'm not sure how loud the OCZ PSUs are.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Fortron 530w is a beast, and pretty quite too. I would deffinatly get it over any other PSU. I t has adjustable rails if you should be so inclined and the thing is serously a beast... darn quite too, I doubt you would be able to hear it much over your harddrives much less CPU fan.

An honest 17A on the +12V is almost certainly enough for your system. Looking at actual power consumption numbers is always an eye opener. Here are my systems' numbers (http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=12209).

Great review here (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article173-page1.html).

Thanks for the links, HammerSandwich. I've been doing quite a bit of reading at SPCR, but I hadn't stumbled upon those links.

At any rate, I'm still weighing options. Those Seasonic PSUs look really nice. My PSU is actually very quiet (my case fans are louder), but like I said, I was worried that it wouldn't be up to the task.

I used an Enlight PSU before I got my Sonata Case (and awesome Antec TruePower.) I agree, they are high quality PSUs. Getting the 420 watt Enlight should be enough, I'm not sure though if it would be after you add an X800...

aerocool aeropower 550W PS has been my choice.

wonderful look, plenty of power, sleeved cables.
compact design: 140mm depth (extremely rare at this rated power)

found it for 100$ CDN

good alternative to vantec PSs.
