Why do people need people buy anything faster than a 800mhz or 1 gig prossesor. I have 256mb of ram and my applications open in less than a blink of an eye. how fast can you open folders. Ok. I understand. Opening folders and stuff can only open so fast. i bet a 500 cleron can open up as fast as my 800 celeron. You guys are probably all thinking games. A video card is all you realy need for games. A realy nice one. I know that a faster prossesor you have, the faster it loads games and junk but who needs it that fast. iu am going to stick with my 800 for a while. Mine opens games and loads them fast enough. Imagine if i got more ram which I will. It would load even faster. Why do you need faster prossesor unlees you do a lot with programing???

You can always use a few extra Mhz for Seti and Folding

I bet you wont be able to tell the difference between a 400 and a 800 when you open a folder... The magic number was 300MHz and windows worked great.....
So why do we need all the extra MHz? Multitasking. Have lots of windows open and you will be able to tell why you want the extra MHz (and RAM)
Why??? Easy answer!!!!!!!!!
Multitasking, gaming, loadding, ripping apps games DVD to DivX, editing pics and images, etc...
We all know that a 300Mhz cpu can do anything ex: business things!!!
Bit it's like when you overclock you always want moe Mhz

Thanks man! just wondering. I am getting lots of ram so i can do lots of junk like surf the internet, play mp3's, type for school, and transfer files all at the same time. That's why I have 768mb of ram. LOL!

to be honest if you don't think you need a faster cpu then you don't. In fact at present your right that about 800mhz is the best you would need, this and a reasonable vid-card would play all games at playable frame rates. frame rates aproaching 200fps are just silly and the arguement that its to make it future proof fools no one as we all know these people buy the latest stuff as soon as it comes out and don't give their hardware a chance to go out of date.
if you don't have the need for a faster cpu then dont get one. But there are certain things that they are useful for and with the price of amd's fastest chips being so low there isn't a reason not to choose them if you are buying now. Of course if you stick with upgrading windows then it does gradually require faster cpu's.
Most people I build systems for only get (now) 800 cD0 celerons. For all practical purposes, you won't need the extra MHZ unless you're a fanatic like me.
I can't remeber where I read it, but it stuck in my mind.
I once read that unless you double your mhz when changing cpu's or overclocking them... the practical difference is hardly noticeable.
I just went and bought a computer for my nephew starting a new business from Wal-Mart:
P3 1gig
128 sdram
30 gig Hdd
8x4x32 Cd-rw
17" monitor
Win Me with upgrade coupon for XP
mouse, internet-ready keyboard
56kv90 fax modem
$898
I am confident that he now has all the computer he will ever need for what he wants it for.... in fact, it's even too much.
What business programs (not inc. graphics type progs) are there out there that even USE or NEED 1 ghz cpu? And 30 gig Hdd will hold all his excell and word docs for generations!

My Athlon needs upgrading. I think the number right now is 800. My friend has an 800 T-bird and I dont notice a difference in anything he does compared to my other buddy's 1 giger.

Maybe you should compare this to cars....
Why do some people buy Ferrari´s, Porche´s, Lamborghini´s or Mclaren F1, when they dont have good roads to push them to the limit???
Its just human nature... Bigger, faster and more powerfull machines, thats what we all want!!! (to bad i dont the $$$$$$$$ to buy one (of each), but i can still dream about it)
Thats why some people do tunning to cars! To get more, to push more to the limit , to be faster than anyother car( of course if they dont have a good Nail Kit - drive like ch#%t- they wont go very far).
Same goes with OC!
I would just love to get my hands on a P4 3.0 Ghz (still dont think i have the $$$ to buy one).
I would try to OC that baby to the limit! (but if i dont know what im doing, im would problably burn the bugger).
Its pure Human Nature - pushing things to their limits!

Lots of games (when I bother to play anymore :), spend a lot of time here right now) and also will be doing some video production, but I think I'll be going with a P4 when the new northwoods come out (is that what they're new chips are called?) and will be postponing video production for then.
I also do some intensive music sampling and wave file creation/manipulation with Soundforge and Cakewalk. High power CPU is key to saving time. Projects have literally been cut in half for me.

Try rendering in MAYA at 800/100 FSB, see how long it takes, then you'll understand why.
Most guys just want to see how high they can get benchmark scores like 3DMark2001 and the SisMark Sandra stuff. For 3D games, a card like the Voodoo5 will scale up all the way to 1.4 gig.
But right, once you get QuakeIII up to over 70 fps, the extra hp doesn't really mean anything except for bragging rights.

Well i can tell a big difference in my PC from 1000 to 1285 and i use every last clock cycle for Seti so nothings going to waist. As far as memory anything over 256 you will not notice that much of a difference unless your running Win2000 anything over 512 in a win 9x system will actually slow it down.

Look guys u dont need faster then 800mhz now as was said befour....but if u wana run windows XP ur going to need every mhz u can get your hands on.... so far wtih teh betas a overclocked cpu @ 1.5Ghz preforms like a 1Ghz cpu on windows 98/2000 its becuase windows XP has alot more threads so u need more processing power...its gogn to kill about 33% of your speed so a 800celeron/Duron i forgot what was said at the time i am writing this will preform like500celeron aprox.. and if your interested in power get an AMD 1ghz with 266bus (even tho this is an intel cpu forum) thats what i would recomend till intel makes another huge price cut....still the 1.3ghz p4 is a bit mroe expensive then 1.4tbird adn a 900-950tbird is the same in proformence as the p4 1.3ghz and a hell of alot cheeper....hey are the current p4s alot harder to cool then the current tbirds? or was i reading something incorrectly
