View Full Version : Peltier

I am new to the Peltier game. This is the setup.
Well was I in for a shock when I tried to put my new 52w peltier on my CPU. I didn't think that 1mm would make so much of a difference. Well need less to say after bending the clip till it was almost flat and getting it to fit my heatsink I found out that my heatsink sucked and couldn't cool the peltier well enough and also that I had water droplets forming on the underside of the pelt. So now I see that I need Foam and a better heatsink. What type of heatsink do I need to get and also should I be useing a cold plate? If so what type do you think I should get. Now for the time being this is going to be an air cooled system with an upgrade later on down the road to a water system.
At max the most my system has ever pushed was 38.8 Watts. So I am guessing that that 52w peltier will hold it or do I need it twice the size of the outputted wattage?

the general rule is that you need a pelt twice the size of what you are cooling. so you will need a 72W pelt. You are going to need a pretty serious heatsink. Water cooling would be ideal, but a good copper heatsink will be able to do it if you can stand the noise of the delta. I would recomend the 462 but I am going to guess you have an Intel due to the wattage you said so I would look at the SK-6 or Glaciator. They can handle the heat(they can cool an Athlon). You may have a lot of fun figuring out how to mount it thout.

Yea no kidding william that extra mm is going to screw me and if I add a cold plat I'll have to make an extender or something.
The hot setup for pelts and Intel chips has been a PEP66 with the springy clip. Perhaps an adaptation of a serious HSF like the Glaciator would be a better choice, perhaps also along with a 72 watt pelt.

I am considering using a pelt on my next PC... but i will need a 156 or 172 watt one, and cant find a cheap PSU that could power it in the UK... any ideas?

The pep66 looks like its for slocket only can someone clear this up for me.
Right now I am looking at these modles:
Alpha PEP66
CAK-38
SK-6
I am wanting to get a nice heatsink that I can use when I go to AMD. I am running a 370 socket system no slocket here.
So guys which do you find to be the best out of these also if you think of something better let me know what you think. I am always open for new ideas.

You can use the PEP66 on FC-PGA (slocket or not) Duron, Athlon and PPGA.
It's a great HS but if I had to buy a new HS I would probably buy the SK-6.
My $0.02

Yea well my problem is that I need one with a spring loaded clip cause of the extra mm or 2 that the peltier is taking up.

I've been interested in peltiers, too, but how do you know how much wattage your CPU gives off?
btw, I can't say I would recommend the CAK38, if you want a really good cooler get the NoiseControl Silverado...better than the CAK and virtually silent! I want! www.noisecontrol.de

Well actually the Noisecontrol Silverado is not a beta cooler than the CAK38 (in cooling)
cause in all the tests that i've seen it says that CAK38 is beta
but of course if ur going for less noise then Noise Control Silverado will be ur choice.

That all well and good but being that my Mother board has transister and compasitors in the way these I know will fit so which is the best for the setup I am useing. Just the heatsink . I know what type of fan I want.
Alpha PEP66
CAK-38
SK-6
