Ok, I had finished putting my new pc together ( p4 3.2 northwood 512 cache, geforce 6800gt, abit IS7mobo, 1gig kingston pc3200ram. The rest I salvaged from old pc) and I didnt connect the 12v thing to the mobo. Needless to say the cpu fan didnt go on and I smell my cpu burning after about 3-4 sec. I immediatly shut it off and starting screaming at myself lol. Anyway I ended up fixing it all and now its running fine.. but im worried that I might have permanently damaged my cpu or something. Do you think I killed the lifespam of my cpu? should I send it back to newegg and get a new one? ( if thats possible) or do you think everything will be ok? Ive been running it all day for the last 2 days and the cpu temps are normal and everything seems to be working fine. What do you think guys? should I be worried or should I just let it go and enjoy my new pc. The dam cpu cost me 289bucks at newegg so im kinda stressin it right now you know? Btw i didnt see any smoke or anything, but I sure could smell the dam thing for like 5 min afterwards.
If its working fine I dont think you should worry too much.
Let the others back me up on this.

Same issue happened for me in regards to the 12v not being plugged in the board. I will be honest and say I am not sure what it is for but I did not get a burning smell or anything afterwards. Mine was on longer than your 3-4 sec. You might just be a little oversensitive or just, not to say you are nuts, imagining things. Just like when we were children and were scared, our bodies would become sensitive, anything that moved would cause us to jump.....anyway just a thought. Especially since the parts need break in...that could be what you were smelling.
If I was certain this happened, I definitely would think about having the chip replaced just because I wanted to be sure though.
Good luck.

Naw, no worries. If it works fine right now, then you shouldn't have any other problems. As far as the lifespan, you may have taken a miniscule hit on that. But ocing does that also. Point is that even while ocing, your chip will still last about 8-10 years. Who really cares about that chip by that time. So enjoy your system and don't worry about it! ;)
