okay i know this isnt smart, but i had my comp all together, but no heatsink or fan, so i threw in another cheapo fan and heatsink, and the comp will turn on but then it shuts off after about 5 secs...is this because the processor is too hot or what?
i have a abit kg7
1.4 ghz athlon
thanks

I'm wondering if there is a temp saftey device clicking your computer off because of high temps, putting a cheap hsf on your athlon is a good way to smoke it... lets hope it isnt damanged!

it isnt fried (at least i dont think so)
but yeah my mobo has a heat sensor that touches the bottom of the cpu, but i thought that only worked w/ a OS? or is that operational all the time?

Your heat suspicion and Trekkers advice are right on the money. Cooling is not a good place to skimp. Check the classifieds for a good HSF at a good price. OC'ers tend to sell stuff cheap to each other.

Sweet jesus, don't do that anymore!!! Most systems DO offer heat protection nowadays. But in a lot of systems, you have to enable it through the BIOS first. I'm not sure about the KG7 though. Get a decent hsf. SVCompucycle has their Golden Gate 40, which is like a OCZ Gladiator for around 30 bucks.

You can probably check in your BIOS and see what temp your CPU is set to shutdown with.

I set mine lower than normal, because I can't afford to be buying extra CPU's if not needed.

At the very least.. I'd probably go to Radio Shack and add some thermal grease to the heatsink if I were you.

If you post it some more I am sure you will let out the magic smoke that makes the CPU run cause once its out it never works again.

all right i know it was dumb but i also know that all of you have sat at home for 2 days w/ out a fan for your system so all you could do was sit there and look at it

also i was wondering......the four black round rubber pieces on my processor....are they supposed to come of or stay on?

Why on earth would you do such a foolish thing? The impatientence of some people just amazes me at times. Usually I am very understanding but this is just plain silly. EVERY manual and every read-me file that comes with EVERY computer componet has these words very big. YOU MUST HAVE GOOD COOLING!! OK, enough of that. Your CPU may not be toast, I agree with these guys with the fact that most BIOS' has the auto shutdown. But remember that an AMD can fry in a matter of seconds with crap cooling. I DO wish you did not fry your chip, but if ya did, I guess you will have better cooling next time.

Those are to keep the CPU core (the silver part) from cracking. KEEP THEM ON, DO NOT TOUCH THEM!

I hope your CPU is okay....those don't come cheap.

Well, it sounds like you don't have a fan connected to your CPU fan header..... I wont tell you that using your 1.4 Athlon with a generic HSF is good or even safe but to boot it up you need a 3 pin RPM monitoring fan connected to that header. Sounds like you're either using a 4 pin fan or a 3 pin style one that doesnt have RPM monitoring.
