Just need to know if a new HSF is in order...i have a Alpha Pal6035 on an AMD athlon running at stock 1.4 on a brand new KG7 motherboard. Here's what i have for temps from motherboard monitor 5:

Sensor 1=22
sensor 2=27
sensor 3=42

This is with the door off of the cpu case.

...30 minutes later, with the door on and running prime95 we have the following readings:

Sensor 1=22
sensor 2=27
sensor 3=50

Now what does everybody think???
Do i need a new HSF, or is this OK?.......one thing to keep in mind.....i really would like to overclock too (wink)

TIA
Steph

My suggestion would be to get some more case fans. If taking off the cover made an 8C differance I would say your not getting enough air flow through your case. also try using some AS2 it will drop it by a few more degrees.

soo it insnt oced yet?
then i think it would be best to buy a new hsf but who am i ...
just wait for more responses
btw can you give some more specs about your pc as well

In your first set of temps was Prime95 running?

I'd say a nicer HSF wouldn't hurt... the PAL6035 was a fine HSF in its day but its day has come and gone...

And 50 C isn't too hot, but it doesnt leave you a lot of safe overhead for overclocking. My processor has an FOP32 on it and it (go figure) hits ony 44 to 45 C load on a 1 GHz AXIA chip at 1.25 GHz. (stock voltage, running F@H).

hey there....here's more specs

Athlon1.4 AYHJA
KG7 lite
gainward geforce3
one hard drive
2 cd roms

I have 1 case fan on the front sucking in and 1 on the back sucking out. I used quickslilver paste for the Pal6035. It is not overcloked yet, but i would like too. In the 1st set of temps in the first post, prime95 was NOT running.

Temps this morning, with the door on, prime95 running, and a slightly higher ambient temp then last night are:

fr. MBM5:

sensor 1=22
sensor 2=29
sensor 3=52

With all that in mind, what does everyone think now........new HSF???

Thans very much for all input.....it really helps.

Quicksilver paste? Do you mean Arctic Silver?

Yeah, I can't really think of any other magical bullets to lower your temps.... I got mine down through casemodding (an 80MM 36 CFM Sunon fan ducted to my processor and a 60 MM Blowhole fan) and through the register 52 Hack for the KT133 chipsets....

If you're wanting to overclock that 1.4 I'd say you'd for sure need a good high end HSF. I just ordered myself a Thermalright SK6 with the new 40.1 CFM YS Tech fan from webuildpcs.com... if not the SK6 I'd say a Millenium Glaciator or a Swiftech MC462A.

Also check the flow in your case - folding your cables over (like a "W") and taping them helps your flow. Your case temps seem a little high and if you tweak the airflow in there it certainly can't hurt CPU temps.

Also, welcome to the forums!! It's nice to have a member of the female persuasion around (aside from the good Compuwife).
