Hi I have been reading alot of peoples posts on this board and realized that my k6 chip was running a bit high compared to everyone elses.. well after some heavy loading i go out and check my bios it says my cpu is at 137F or 56C.. I have been running it at that tempurature all summer long with no covers on my case it only got hotter with everything on.. 2 hard drives, burner, onboard video, ethernet card... soo i was sitting here this morning and decided to take my athlon fan (waiting for new chip to come) and stick it on and see how that did its now down to 105F after heay loading.. is that still too high i still don't have the covers on but i mean the athlong heat sink is huge compared to the factory fan that was on there i was hoping it would be cooler. oh and another thing i can't overclock my k6 not at all i only have up to 5.5 multiplier and its a 500mhz so it would only be 50mhz but i can't even do that i tried changing my fsb from 100mhz to 97mhz,95mhz,85,mhz but none run oh wait is that 85 slower than 500 i can't remmeber but anyway i just can't overclock this baby, i tried after putting in my athlon heatsink this morning and still it won't work and when i try upping the volt up to 2.3 from 2.2 it goes stupid and i have to wait 20 mins before i can get into my bios and put it back at 2.2 and save it and get out before it goes nuts again...

Well, first of all, what "Athlon" heatsink are you referring to? Many K6-2's put out just as much heat as a Duron. Are you using thermal compund? What about case cooling? Here's a trick, too - on all the K6-2 Chips, you can get a 6x multiplier by setting the multiplier to 2. A little trick AMD did, I think they were planning on taking the K62 core a little higher than they wound up doing. Does the voltage thing happen if you set it higher than 2.3 v?

Basically we need a little more info here.

Your motherboard may be reading a little high. Mine does, because almost every temperature monitor I use says it's about 20 degrees cooler than BIOS.
Of course, my mobo is finicky and has a bad case of PMS (P-O'd Mobo Syndrome).

What K6-2 do you have? I've got a 300mhz running at 350 - it might just be the particular chip.

yeah it flips out when i put it at 2.3v as well.. I had once put the chip all the way up to 3.4 that didnt' help any.. lol.. its a 500mhz k6-2 i don't know anything more never bothered to really look at the chip.. it had compound on it from the other heatsink i think.. there was this sticky type stuff.. it also has a silverish colored metal thing on top of the chip.. unlike my unlucky athlon which did not

My board gets angry if it gets too cold. Which I don't understand, but, oh, well. I haven't had any problems with voltage.
What board are you running?

The sticky stuff on the top is either a thermal pad or thermal grease. It sounds more like a thermal pad, though.

What motherboard do you have? Does it have any other problems than just not overclocking?

no thats really the only problem its a SIS 530 it think

Put your case cover back on! It designed to circulate air from your fan very efficiently.......your letting all the cool air out man...

id put the case back on but did i mention i have two hard drives and it only has 1 bay i could put it on top of my floppy but i don't feel like frying my 40 gig again in 2 wks like i did last time.. and when the case is on it is hotter btw.. and im not gonna dump anymore money into this computer no way.. thats why i have my computer im building for is to dump money in...

If you've got a socket A hsf on there now and it had been running fine with the socket 7 hsf, stable, no lockups etc., then it sounds like it's working fine to me, especially since you're "done" with that system anyway.

By the way, as mentioned in the above post, 2X = 6X on the later K6's. Although these chips are not known to overclock very well, I'd try the higher multiplier, it worked for me.

Good Luck!
