Hey guys I need some help. I recently bought an Ati 9800pro and I'm having some issues. The board is very unstable when running in 8x mode playing any games, it will normally lock up or crash within min's. if I run in 4x it seems to be fine.

by the way here are my specs if needed

p4 3.06
asus p4s800
1g ram
400w pu

any help would be appreciated

Can you give us more info on the Vid Card. Is it manufactured by ATI or someone else (sapphire, powercolor, etc.)? How many MB (128 or 256) how many bits (128 or 256).
In any case, disable fastwrites and set the AGP apurture to 128.
You may also want to see if your mobo chipset drivers are up to date.
How much of a slowdown do you get with 4x? Is it noticable?

ok here ya go.

Its manufactured by ATI
128mbddr
256bit
my psu is 400w

I dont notice a huge difference bettween 4x and 8x, but I figure if I paid for an 8x I should get an 8x right?

I tried to update my bios today but failed, it said the new bios didnt match the board??? are the chipset drivers part of the bios?

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS! Anyways, The P4S800 should support AGP 8X from what Im seeing here. What brand is your PSU? That makes one hell of a difference.

The chipset drivers are separate from the bios.

turn your apature down to 128 or 64 and see how that works.

Also, you should probably look for a new PSU, because that Raidmax unit is probably causing you some problems as well. I'd head over to the PSU part of the forums and do some snooping as to what good PSUs are out right now.

Just to add in my gripes with my new BBA 9800 Pro....

When I try to play FarCry it crashes back to Windows, no matter what settings I choose. I've tried repairing and reloading it, same problem. Then I saw that Farcry has bugs with some Ati cards and that you need a patch. I didn't feel like waiting for a new patch, so I returned Farcry and got Splinter Cell.... which is turning out to be just as fun, and a heck of a lot harder.

Also... after I installed the card, my network connection to AOL disappeared ( you know how it says " America Online : Dialup Connection" in your Network Connections folder) and now I can't sign online. I tried reinstalling the net. conn. but it wouldn't install off of the CD. I don't think it's related to the card, but it is kinda weird.
