USB DSL modem..??

Are they any good? I finally can get DSL and its with USB modems to which I'm not very familiar with.*as if i was much more familiar with DSL to begin with*

DSL I understand pretty well, what I'm worried about is a post I saw that state that USB cable modem eat up CPU cycles and i DO NOT want that if it can be avoided.

By all reports i ahve a pretty good built in LAN and also by reports it handles a second NIC card pretty well too.

Is the NIC modems better than the USB's? Help with any info you can provide...my Dad has already order it before I could come and ask all these question....but they ahven't come to setup anything yet and I dont expect them til sometime next week.

I also want to share this connection with my other computer which is older. It also has usb, but not LAN/NIC.

Honestly, USB modems are usually garbage. Tell them that you don't have USB ports on your computer and get one with a Ethernet port. That way you can use a router and a hub to share it to other computers if you have them. You will be happier in the long run.

USB was NOT meant for networking. Ethernet was. Beg for an ethernet modem and tell them to take their USB modems to give to some needy children.

Already phoned them and talked the guy into switching the order to ethernet modem :) Explained that although the USB DSL would be fine on my dad's system, but it wouldn't work worth @#$^&* on mine as I'm at current O/c above 145 FSB in which USB has trouble functioning...I lied of course as I'm at current at 124 fsb and not pushing any further til i get a thermal probe ;)

From what I understand(limited reading so far) to share the modem with the other computer I'll need 2 NIC cards(i already have a built in LAN) , cat 5 cable, and a router...

Is the router absolutely necessary? Seems like I could connect the modem to either my NIC card or built in LAN and use the cat 5 to connect this system to the other via NIC cards...I spend a large amount of time online vs the other(dad) very little time.

A pal recently tried a USB DSL router. His verdict? Garbage. If you have a regular DSL router, and you already have a NIC in box A, You simply need a NIC in box B to connect the two boxes via a HUB. The Hub isn't mandatory for two boxes. A CAT5 Crossover cable from NIC A to NIC B will do the trick. Make sure that it's a Crossover cable, not a regular CAT5 cable.

Cool thanks as I'd rather spend the $100 for a router for a faster cpu ;) 700 duron is nice, but now I want more :D

I personally would go with a router because you don't have 1 computer that needs to be on 24/7. What if that computer has stability problems? What if a nic goes bad from too high of an fsb? Stick with a dedicated router and a nic in each computer and you'll never regret it.

Although I dont like the concept of USB modems or networking through USB, I have set one up once and it worked with no visible degradation to the system and was a no brainer to install (like most USB items) The download speeds were the same as any other DSL I had seen before.

The reason companies try to ship USB modems is because they are so easy to install and dont require a NIC which alot of people dont have. They're just trying to make life simpler for themselves.

Right now I'm only at 124 fSb, but eventually will go higher when I have a better O/cing mb. My system already stays only 24/7 unless there are thunder storms moving thru the area.( Folding@Home 24/7 x2'700@868 & 500@501' :D

My personal experience on Dsl modems say's that Usb connection sucks, my system temps was higher of 5-6 degree C then the normal on the system that Fold 24/7.
Now I'm using a second Nic for the modem, that supports Usb & Ethernet connection, when the other works for the local network, sharing also the Dsl line :D

I dont Understand?
I have an ethernet modem on my pc.
I am a computer tech. I set this stuff up for others,
The usb modems I have more success with. I havent seen
any fail on overclocked comp's yet! While the Internals
failed numerous times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also find better preformance through most usb modems.

Excuse me but probably my English isn't good enough,
I've understood everything you sayed, but why you speak of 'internal' modem if we are speaking of modem connected through Usb or Ethernet? for me are both external and connected or with a Usb cable to the Pc or with a Lan Rj45 cable to the Nic :)

Internal meaning the one that goes in the PCI bus
External meaning the one that goes in the RJ45 Or USB
I have had more luck with External not internal.

I reccomend the Ethernet & USB Rather than the Internal PCI.
But Ethernet is Better than USB.
