View Full Version : Is this possible? Using a wireless router as an access point?

I just got yahoo dsl, and decided to get the wireless modem/router (1000hg http://www.2wire.com/?p=106 ) that they offer. My current set up includes 2 computers downstairs connected via a standard wired router (linksys) which is then hardwired to the wireless modem/router. I have 2 computers upstairs that I want to share the internet with and I have a USRobotics wireless router and a USR wireless card that I can use. How do I do this?
Basically I want to use the USR router as a wireless access point and then have the 2 upstairs computers hardwired to it, is that possible? I have no idea how to set this up, and I have no experience with wireless networks, so any help at all would be appreciated.

Is this you you want to set it up...?
If so you would need to run a hard wire from a port from a uplink port of the linksys router up to the US robotics router and then Turn off the DHCP furnction of the USrobotics router. The only way to get away from running a wire is if your USrobotics router has a "bridge function" but most dont have that functionality. Why not just get wireless cards for the 2 computers upstairs and take the USrobotics router completly out of the netork. Your 2 PCs upstairs would connect wirelessly directly to the modem/wireless router.
Although I have no experience in setting up wireless myself...Shouldn't one also mention about security of wireless? How do minimise a compromise? (What does one do?)

best ways is to use Wep and especially Mac address filtering if your router supports it.

that picture is exactly what I wanted to do. I was hoping that the router would connect wirelessly directly to the modem but it doesnt look like this router will do that. I guess Ill just have to buy some wireless cards. Thanks for the help.

If it is possible to set either one up as a client to the other one, then it is possible. One router will just act like a normal client and the other one will be a wap.

you could buy a wireless bridge which you would put in place of the Usrobotics router. but I think 2 wireless cards would still be cheaper as they are getting pretty cheap nowadays....
Looks like CompUSA has a USB Wireless Adaptor (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=305657&pfp=BROWSE) on sale for 10 bux after rebate. I have a Dlink USB wireless adaptor and it works better (more range/signal strength) than my PCI wireless card I have.
