View Full Version : ATTN: idea to help promote folding
so yea, I'm sure you guys have seen the other thread, idea came out of it to get a sponsor, so I thought newegg(since we already have a relationship with them. so here's the idea, they sponsor us by once every 6 months donating something(I was thinking we could even accept refurb items, I mean a refurb CPU, as long as it works, dosn't change much) or maybe even a low end board w/ a fairly high cpu as the first prize, if they gave us a second prize we could make it something similar, I dunno, but I'll continue. anyway, we'd run the contest like this,(first one would obviously be slightly amended) there are 2 classes, current folders, new folders. Each compete seperately. the winner would get the prize, and winner is determined by whoever has the greatest impact on folding(in the past 6 months, run twice a year so that people have an inncentive to fold longer and harder) this would be primarly a) who had the biggest point increase based on percentage(with attention to case by case, someone who goes up 600%from 50ppd to 300ppd would have an easier time than someone who'd hafta work from a base of 2k ppd) and b) in respect to the 6 months(to encourage growth and commitment throughout the 6 month period, and not just come prize time
if newegg dosn't work, we could of course try other vendors, maybe even review the product before we part it out as the prize
of course all prizes will fold ^_~
so how ya like the idea?
(mdcomp said I needed to do this as one of the steps to make it happen, so yea, say something good plz, deciding mods plz ignore this plea ^_^)

Good idea, but I think that the contest should be done in in different groupings, like people of different color ppd compete against each other, and people who are red can't win anything. ^_^
lol, *pulls one cpu to drop back down* ok :p

eh its a cool idea but not too realistic.
if it works, more power to you!
A solid proposal needs to be thought out before anything happens, as I told MLMIB. Contests will only be allowed if the proposal is really solid and nothing can go wrong. Contests have been problematic in the past and that's why the staff and myself are hesitant in allowing them once again. Please keep that in mind. I don't want to crush this idea, I really want to find a way to make this work, so lets get an awesome proposal together, so that contests can be run once again.

How about anyone that break's 100th place in less then a month get's XXXX prize runner up get's XXX and 3rd place get's XX?

Only need to fold at 25,000 PPW. I dont think anyone has that many rigs. Somewhat unrealistic i think. (When starting from ZERO)....
Huum guess no one would win then how about 50K in a month>?
but the problem tere is it dosn't foster long term relations, if you consider it every six months, and it takes into account the past 6 months, we might have forum members who will fold for the possability of getting something free every 6 months, 'n if we just did it for new members, once the prize period past, they might just leave too.
I dunno, can we have a mod weigh in so we know what to do
Ok well then let's try 50K in a month 100K in 3 month's and 250K in a yr?
There are many things that you have to consider before even hashing out the guidelines of the contest. Prizes need to be considered, as well as who will give the prizes out. Don't worry about 25k or 50k or anything like that just yet.

Paypal bux of gift card's from our fav online store? What about hardware surely we can come up with a few 120gb hd's while on sell or something maybe even a ati 9800 pro or something.

I guess I wasn't really clear enough in what I said. Sorry about that. I meant more like the logistics of it, rather than what prize. Like how it will be sent out, who will send it out. There are many things to be considered. The staff is very careful about projects like this because of the contest problems we had in the past.
Matt
ok, well first and foremost I believe we need to know from a mod are we allowed to seek sponsorship from an online store, once we find out we can go foward
as for the rest, I think we just designate one person to recieve the prize whenever they are handing them over to us(them being the sponsor) than he'd ship to the winner(winner is decided by the top 5 folders, of course they're out than, sry, this can be changed/talked about later, just an idea) and by participating in the game you submit to rules, like the part is recieved, beyond that we have no liablity(if you oc it, fry it, break it, sry, we can't cover it kinda of deal)
I think that'd be simple enough

You can not seek sponsorship until you speak with Newbie_Doo. Anything that is officially affiliated with oc forums has to be approved first.
I would also find out more about the contest situation. That has to be approved, too. Perhaps you could get a better idea of what needs to be planned if you ask the proper authority first.
Good luck!
:)

I don,t know if people here remember the noob folders contest I did a couple of months ago....the goal was 15 000 points for a 2500+ Barton and the winner was blkdiamond.... Guess what happen after the 15 000 points..... (Hint, go to the EOC stats) :bang head:
thats crap....., thats why I want it to be over a 6 month period, and for old members as well as new, to encourage long term relations, and someone dosnt just take it and go

Prizes should be where we get our sponsors like "The winner will recieve an Athlon XP 2500+ running at 333Mhz from Newegg.com. With a lifetime rating of 9.7 on resellerratings.com, Newegg is one of the best online suppliers of computer parts." Or something like that. Also for new folders I would have a smaller prize like a gift certificate or something because we need to be prepared to lose that person once the contest is over. An optimistic goal would be that 20% of the new folders stay once the contest is over. For the folders that have been here for a while I think we should do something like the F-BOX program at overclockers.com.au. Maybe have a mod actually handle shipping the prizes so people don't think it's a fraud. And definatly update the OC Folding website. Nobody is going to participate when they see an outdated website for our team.
This is a good idea and I hope it works out.

think about 6 month or 1 year contest and hardware as the prize....1 year is a long time to get somehting that is old.think about it...a 9800 pro in 6th months not even a year ain't worth much :( hardware for shortterm money/gift certificate would be better long term :)

really good idea, i think that would motivate a lot of people. I do a bunch of business to GAry at sidewinder, i'll blast him an e-mail to see if he is interested.
it wasn't a no ^_^(and the prize wouldn't be declared at the beginning of the period, it'd be like at the end of the 6 month contest period, newegg would pass along whatever prize, we'd get it, and ship it, we wouldn't let something age 6 months)

This would be great if we can make it happen. The idea with Newegg has been brought up before in this thread. (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=88820) I thought someone had contacted them and asked about it but it wasn't in this thread and I don't have alot of time to search others. Just an idea to check other threads on contests and such to maybe get more ideas and solve any problems that may have been brought up before if they are still valid. Sorry for the mouthfull but Good Luck MLMIB.
Here are some of my ideas. Its late, I have had 3 hours sleep last night and done a 10 hour shift today so I apologise if there are any points I missed ;).

1. Three people should be nominated to run the contest.
1.1 The decision of these three people is final on all matters.
1.2 These three people are excluded from entering the contest.
1.3 1, 2 or preferably 3 of these people should be trustworthy members who have shown a comittment to the forums or folding in general, and preferably at least one should be either a Moderator or an Administrator.
Prizes
2.1 Prices would be sourced from an appropriate vendor,
2.2 and held in the possesion of one of the aforementioned persons.
2.3 Prizes would remain the property of Overclockers.com until shipped to the contest winners.
2.4 In the event of the contest being cancelled the three persons mentioned in part 1 will determine what is to be done with the prizes. Their decision is final, as is their decison on all matters.
The Contest
3.1 The contest will run for a period of x days.
3.2 Statistics will be sourced from the extreme overclocking stats and the Pandegroups own stats pages.
3.3 The winner will be the person(s) who... [biggest change in PPD/most points/etc].
3.3a [possible backup plan for deciding a winner if 3.3 fails]
3.4 In the event of a clear winner not being chosen for whatever reason, the persons mentioned above shall decide what is to happen with the prizes.
3.5 The persons mentioned in part 1 may disqualify any member for any reason they see fit, including but not limited to: cheating or other unfair conduct, offenses comitted at these forums, bringing disrespect to the team, improper conduct.
Any good?
very nice structure to the rules, agree with the committie(was gunna say the top 3 folders, but we can just pick three outright) other than that I think the contest should be over the duration of 6 months(aka the contest is always running, never stop the fold)
but very nice

As mentioned above ppl will do almost anything for a chance to win a prize. I mean look at fear factor. LOL I'm certain if we got a sponser such as Newegg or Sidewinder and started contests we would get a lot of new members that would stop folding after the contest was over. However again as mentioned above we would get a percentage of the new folders that stay and thats what we are after. I mean you cant expect everyone to be dedicated to folding as the majority of us here. If we could could get a 15% to 20% of the new members to stay on that would be great. Now on to a suggestion.
Now this is just an idea and approval would have to come from the top but here it is.
As an incentive to get a sponser perhaps we could have the sponsers advertisement shown at the top or bottom of the folding team page. Of course this would mean alot of lobbying to and work at Inet but I think it could be done for just this page. Of course with ad space involved I would expect more like 3 items a month from the sponser so in turn the contest would be on going and be an incentive for ppl to stay folding.
Just a thought. What do you guys think.

Nice work, David. This is what I was trying to articulate to everyone, a structured proprosal/set of rules is needed when presenting this idea to the administration. It's a fine start. Let's work from there.

would be wonderfull Idea, but um our webpage is total crap right now. we had a very short and brief stent with updating it like a few PMs and an IRC channle that went patute, but there are still some interrested and I suggest....nope I would demand that the website be updated before this contest could be held....ok ok I can't demand anything, but by golly this really needs to be done contest or not!

I have been thinking about the contest thing. What ever is done it needt to be a loooooong term contest. Threr are alot of people who may have a lot of powah available to them and join to win the contest for the free stuff just long enough to get it and amscray....just like b4. This leaves actual long term members out. Everyone should have a chance. BTW...A top producer form any team could easily win any contest....

Sorry,
Real life gets in the way sometimes.
As long as the contest is run without any liability to the Forums, I have no problem with it. When the Forums (and by extension the forum's good name) are involved, someone has to personally guarantee the delivery of whatever it is that is promised. The last time that something went awry, that someone was me. If a Folding team contest is run, my preference is that someone escrows the prize, and validates (similar to our classifieds verification) possession.
So...if you can make it conform to the above limitations, then go for it.
Anthony
Whoa! Holy Thread Resurrection Batman (and bonus Robin).

A possible sample letter to retailers, which I would happily send out.
Dear Sir/Madam,
If possible, I would like to offer you a legitimate chance to gain some exposure, free advertising and benefit a cause all at the same time. This is not a spam message, and if you are unable to help I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this email.
I am a member of an online Forum known as "The Overclockers Forums" or "OC Forums". This forum is located at http://www.ocforums.com. Many of our members participate in a Distributed Computing program, which uses spare computer processor cycles to process sections of the process of protien folding. This research may one day help us understand and then find cures for diseases and conditions such as cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons and other protien related conditions. This project is known as "Folding@Home" and its homepage can be found at http://folding.stanford.edu.
In order to raise awareness of this project and to try and convince more people to join this project, run by Stanford University which is a respected Educational Institution, we would like to run a contest.
However, we are in need of a prize to provide to the winner of this contest. We were hoping that perhaps you could donate an item, gift certificate or some other prize for us to use. In return, you would be mentioned as a sponsor on the forums which have 50,000+ members, and on the front page at http://www.overclockers.com which has many regular visitors.
On behalf of the OC Forums Folding team, I would like to thank you for any merchandise you may be able to provide.

Is anyone able to put something together for this month?
I would like for someone to atleast produce a folding update about our progress since mid december for the frontpage before the end of the month, and if we could follow that up with a contest that would be the icing on the cake. :)
I will see what I can write up myself, but would prefer if someone else could write something INTERESTING.
I had one person show interest in the contest via pm, I'm waiting to see if their interested in helping me with the organizing part. It boils down to ...
who's sponsoring us, a retailer or manufacturer, it dosn't matter. and personally, I doubt many of us care if it was even a refurb(think of it, newegg would be faster to donate a refurb cpu, 'n I'm sure abit has a few refurb motherboards lying around. they don't get much for them, we don't care as long as they work, right?)
help with this by listing the retailer/manufacturer with contact method 'n contact information so we can mass mail out later
than we need the letter, david's looks very nice 'n is a def. canidate.
the only other thing holding this back is a college intersession class I'm in. it's over saturday 'n than I'll be able to start to get on this

To tell the truth I don't know that the sponser thing will go that far. This is not to say I wouldn't be willing to lend a hand. I just think it would be easier to throw another contest together with donated money from the members here in the short run and keep our climb alive. My free time is limited as well all though for different reasons but it doesnt' take long to paypal some cash to a contest representative :)
I'm looking at this from a ppov too. I'm really at my max for # of pc's but don't have enough free to go the dually route yet. I think a few bucks here and there for a contest might draw more interest and result in more ppd for the team then what I could ever manage by myself.
I'm a noob here, but I think I have an idea that may help...
Its a contest based on a two tier system that encourages people to join, and for people to increase their folding power.
-Every month, people's point contributions would be tallied.
-People with >5000 (this number is just a suggestion) points in that month get put in a drawing for the monthly prize. On a slinding scale people with higher point totals get a 'ticket' in the drawing for their amount of points contributed. For example:
5000 pts = 1 ticket
10000 pts = 2 tickets
25000 pts = 3 tickets
and so on...
-People with <5000 points would also get in a the drawing for the monthly prize.
Joining gets you a bonus ticket in the first monthly drawing
COmpleting your first work unit gets a ticket
COmpleteing your 10th work unit and so on....
make it easy for people to get started, and encourage increasing their point production/participation. Also, the veterans don't get left out in the cold, and people who manage to ramp up their production get rewarded for it, and rewarded for staying with it.
Every six months you could have a bonus drawing where all the tickets you have earned get placed in the pot for a major prize.
You could make the monthly drawing something small or 'folding significant'...like a t shirt with a protein on it ...
Anyway...I hope that one or all of my suggestions are helpful...

Nice comment Grub. And welcome to the team. :D
vry nice idea's, well thought out and workable system. we do need ways to sustain it though, shirts 'n things of that nature I'm sure we can pool money for, but for people to notice the prizes need to be substantial, 'n eventually collecting money for that will fail. aka sponsors. but again, I'll work on that next week. back to class
welcome to the fold grub
Welcome to the forums Grub!
I like the idea - have a sort of price draw, with various ways that members can get tickets.
Something like this would be cool imho:
1 ticket for joining
1 ticket per %age increase in points that week
1 ticket for referring another member?

I like the idea. Here are my thoughts. How do you define joining? I would define joining as folding at least one WU, not emailing the contest coordinator saying, "I'm in!" Also have some significant prizes. The more WU (or points) the more significant the prize. I'm in a slump right now (after Christmas) but I would be willing to support this financially or donate some prizes at a later time.
Welcome to the forums Grub!
Thanks fella's (for the greetings). I sincerely hope that you guys continue the team promotion (in some form or another). It was the Half-Life give away that caught my eye, but I'm continuing to fold for the potential research advances, and for the fun of it...I know that every little thing helps when your talking about maintaining interest in a long term project such as this...Stats, contests, word of mouth advertising...it all contributes. CHeers!!!

Email for Newegg marketing@newegg.com. I have an email in to directron to try and get an email addy for a marketing person there. I agree with you MLMIB on getting a sponser for a sustained contest prize program. I just figured it will take a dedicated person and a good bit of time and negotiation to get it going.
In the meantime I was hoping to get a contest with a small prize ready for this month just to keep interest alive. Maybe a good matx mb or another game. Orion25 got something great started; lets keep it alive.

The referral idea, in my mind, would be a potential problem. I'd like to think we're all mature enough to avoid such problems, but arguments over who referred who are a possibility. So and so feels cheated because he didn't get credit for helping a new folder make the decision to start, she thinks a new folder should have been a referral if they don't specify someone, etc.
I was thinking that we could have two categories: Active Users and Number of Machines. For the first one, any member of Team 32 who actively folds during the length of the contest is eligible to participate in the drawing. This would be veryappealing to the new members, who may be a bit intimidated by us "farmers." Even if you can only fold on one or two machines, you won't be at a disadvantage against those of us with greater resources. A second one could be based on the numbers of active machines added over the contest time period. This would encourage members to build and borg. We would simply compare the active machines at the start against the active machines at the end.
With all the "sick talent" we have on this team, surely someone could come up with a script to track these details. Do it in PHP and it could display the log right on the site.
I see a potential problem with the machines as well - eg I run two copies of FaH on my duallie. Its one machine but two CPUs. It registers as two CPUs on the stats. However, if I were to run a third and fourth copy, even for legitimate reasons (in case I was on dialup and didnt want to be left with no WUs to work on for example) my machine, with two CPUs, would show as FOUR CPUs without increasing the power added to the cause.

Sometimes less is more. You can fake many things with FAH but the only way to get more points is to fold more. I think that using the points would be sufficient. You could see it if they increased their power in their points. For example you could say at the beginning this person was averaging 200pts per day but at the end he was averaging 2000pts per day an increase of 10x.
Personally I think an extra ticket would be good for new members, to encourage an increase in the number of users. However, each new user would have to complete at least, say, 100 points over the 2 week/month period that the contest is run, to discourage completing one WU to get a "ticket". Each new member would have to post with their FaH username, and that way mods can check to make sure we dont have many members using the same IP.
So (hypothetically) we could do it as follows:
- Members sign up for the contest in a specific thread, stating username for FaH
This should make keeping track of entrants easy(easier) and also allows us to check for members trying to enter as multiple new Folders.
- Extra tickets would be awarded for reaching, say, each new milestone as defined by the ExtremeOverclocking stats page
This means that members are encouraged to strive towards each new milestone. It is also weighted slightly in favour of newer members who increase folding power a lot, as they will fly through the first few milestones.
- One ticket per %ge increase in team rank
Eg if I start at rank #100 and end on #90 then I get 10 extra tickets. If I start at #1000 and finish at #100 I still get 10 tickets, as progressing through lower ranks is easier than through upper ones.
Then we assign each ticket a number, and have a nice simple random number generator spit out some numbers.

Grub's idea looks like it would cover everybody as long as I don't have to keep track of it :)
For Directron = Lee@directron.com
Oh and our user trend line going down (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_users.php?s=&t=32)

True, but we are only 11K average PPD behind [H], that stat keeps improving.

Hey, I'd certainly be willing to help out here. Ever since I went to college, I haven't been able to obtain internet access(still trying though), so my rigs are down for folding(though I have a couple of friends who are folding for me back home, but they both have pretty slow rigs), so I want to be able to help any way I can. If there's anything I can do to help this thing move forward let me know and I'd be more than happy to participate :)

I wasn't sure if you were going to run it through a spell check before you sent it, so I thought I'd mention that.
You might consider something along this format as well...... not to be picky, but my dad's a grammar nut, so it's kinda passed on to me as well.

Oops ... my bad spelling. Although as far as I know, "Dear Mr so-and-so" -> "yours sincerely" and "Dear Sir/Madam" -> "Yours faithfully"
