I have read a few articles that say Amd is going to use modle numbers instead of clock speeds so the public will see, A1600 On a 1.4 gig chip. This is so the consumer will think a p-4, 1.6 and an AMD Model A1600 are the same speeds.

I understand the reasoons to do this, I am also aware an AMD 1.4 out performas a P4, 1.6.

SO why is AMD not marking the processor at 1.6 if it out does or pulls equal to the P4, 1.6 ????????????

Please list Opinions in the yes Amd should remark the processor as a true 1.6 if it does compete point to point with INTELL.

Or list a No Amd should keep it's current MHZ rating system in place and not remark it's processors at all.

Or,vote with a 911, To let AMD Remark them with Model numbers for the sake of the slow witted or ill informed consumer that will most likely think AMD model #1600 and an INTELL 1.6 are equall.

Why a 911 for the last vote Cause Amd will take a beating if thay do this. It is to reminiscient of the cyrex days.{I know I spell bad if you agree vote f- for me on spelling LOL}

If I bought a cpu marked 1600 and put in my pc and it showed 1400mhz I would not be happy.

NO.

because when you are buying a xxxxmHz cpu it has NOTHING to do with preformance, they can however say their chip is equivelient to the best P4 out as of now, but they can't cheat us out and they won't.

NO it shold keep its current mhz ratin gdue to the fact that most AMD buyers have used INTEL and switched over casue they already know bout puters. my tbird 750 was like 2x faster than my celle 800

amd is rating the 1.4 as 1600 p4 eqivalent. But that is way unnderrated its more like the 1.4amd is a 1.8 p4

I have mixed feelings in this, I think that it is in AMD's best intrest to do this, although istead of saying it is "model1600" to say it is "PR1600"

A "PR" performance rating is definately needed - but also, they need to maintain their original markings. There is plenty of room under the copyright line on the core to add the PR rating:

AMD Athlon
A1400AMS3C
AYHJA0130UPDW
Y6031850379
1999 AMD
PR 1600

The PR to show equivalency to a P4 would be useful in marketing, and maybe disspell the myth that more MHZ = better performance, which Intel is marketing.

i think they should keep it the way it is, because if they advertised it @ a higher MHz rating then it actually is, that would be false advertising, even though they are actually better and outperform the intel chips.

I don't think they should do a PR rating. I think it might even hurt them in the long run.

exactly!, thats what they should do.

I posted this for 2 reasons 1 obvious and now this reason,HOW CAN INTELL AND AMD BE CORRECT IN MHZ RATINGS,,,I mean if p-4,1.7 is slower in performance than a 1.4 AMD THERE IS A PROBLEM here.....

Is Intell over rating the processor,Is AMD under rating,,,Or are these 2 big Chip Makers using different methods to determine clock speeds ????????

I want To know how a chip gets it's MHZ rating....Do these 2 companys adhere to a standard or do thay each slap a number on there chip that is pulled out of the air.......or do thay have a test thay run ???Does Any one know the answer to this ???

The frequency x the multiplier = cpu speed and always has.
The performance is determined by the instruction set effeciency and cache as well as other design implementations.

No... all it's going to do is confuse the *%&@# out of the 'Joe Public' buyers. If you didn't know what you now know and someone told you that your P4 1.7 is slower than your buddies' 1.4. Would you believe him?

(X and Y being variable in my statement) The Intel and AMD CPUs really DO run at those frequencies listed.

Where the difference is showing now is in how much work a given CPU can do per clock cycle. (the rising and falling of the waveform made by the clock generator) The AMD CPUs are doing significantly more work per clock cycle than the Intel chips. So even though, say, a Pentium 4 is running at 1.7 GHz, it's doing the same overall amount of work that an Athlon is doing at 1.4 GHz. The Athlon is more efficient. It's crudely equivalent to horsepower and torque in a car engine. Horsepower is a nice quotable number that sounds good on paper, but it's the torque of the engine that does the work. (sorry, VERY crude explanation and analogy, but I'm getting tired of typing this post.. lol)

I agree with you Would and that was very good the way you explained this matter and i think they should keep it the way it is i like the frequency rating better then a performance rating and by keeping it like this i know i will get better bang out of my buck sticking with AMD unless intel can do what AMD does for the same price then i might consider buying an Intel. INTEL IS GREEDY.....

well i here is my 2 cents....i think that amd should try to push its sales any way possible ....PR ratings are good but i think it should say something like this at the post

AMD T-Bird PR 1900Mhz (1500Mhz) have the real clock in a slightly smaller print so ppl dotn get confused taht the cpu is realy faster then it is. but if they go full blown PR....that it doesnt show the real mhz anywhere ....i saw somewhere that ppl could tweek the bios and then change the PR there to likie 10Ghz something crazy like that....and then we will have the same problems that Intel had with Pentuim classic where ppl would remark them a pentium133mhz was remarked to pentium166 and they made huge money for overclocking this way they could pretend to overclock and sell it and its exactly 0% faster and some stupid stores might tryto sell a 1900mhz PR 1.5ghz tbird for more becuase it says 1900mhz on it.....tahts why u need something like a dual posting of the speed at POST.....:D

thats my 2cents heh
