View Full Version : Exact, optimal position for a side case fan

Where, precisely, should I place my side case fan in regards to CPU location for optimal cooling? Should the top edge of the case fan line up to the center point of the CPU fan? Case fan directly over the CPU fan? Top edge of the case fan lined up to the bottom edge of the CPU fan?
Anyone have a program where I can "dial" in various fan locations, case dimensions...and it will show me all the optimal locations for fan placement? Programmers and software developers, get to work! (I can dream) :D
So...where do I put it?? (be nice)

which way does the fan blow on your heatsink towards it or away?

Hi Despotes,
I suppose that the best way is to center the fan on the panel on the center of the Hs, but on my system for the moment I've installed 2x92mm fans on my left case panel onto the Pci/Agp cards, as soon as possible I wanna install another fan like suggested ;)
I hope it helps you.

If your CPU fan is blowing down to the HS then the fan can be placed above it.
On my Supermicro CS760A full tower case, I placed 4 120mm 105cfm fans in the left door - placed such that the entire motherboard is receiving air. In your case, 2 fans might be a good idea - one over the CPU area, and one over the memory area.

I vaguely remember Hoot (I think) saying that putting the side case fan directly centered over the HSF is not the best position. Correct me if I'm wrong.
