View Full Version : oncee again, is it worth it?
i am getting a 9700 pro for like 145, ati has on sale a 9800 pro for 179, both 128, 256bit, is it worth the difference and have me sell the 9700 on ebay? for the 9800?

I would spend the extra money for the 9800 for the sole reason that it should OC much higher. Then you also have a chance at getting an R360 core w/ temp sensor.

I suppose it depends on why you want it...... if you're a gamer and you want the most speed possible then I'd go with the 9800pro..... Mustanley said it best, if you want a chance at the temp probe and r360 core (basically an xt at pro cost) then go with the pro again. If money is an issue go with the 9700pro (an excellent buy for the money). There are folks in this forum who swear that the 9700pro is a better card than the 9800pro for overclocking..... I would disagree with this but I have to at least tell you that some people feel strongly about this. If I were in your shoes I'd go with the 9800pro (actually I was in your shoes but I decided to keep my 9700pro as well). Both are great cards but make no mistake, the 9800pro is a better card than the 9700pro, although probably not by much..... But if you're able to flash it to a pure xt then you have yourself a real deal.

Depends on the purpose. I'd say spend the little extra $$ and get a 9800 now. This will give you more incentive to hold onto it longer while the X800s/ high-end Nvidias come down. Or think of it this way- this may be the last AGP 3D card you buy! Make it last, until PCI Express gets sorted out.
As for me, I held out with a GF3 ti200 for nearly three years, then finally sprung for the R360 256 -> XT deal. This should hold me over for quite some time.
Or, of course, do nothing at all and get by with what you have ;)

unreal,
Please check out the ATI website http://shop.ati.com/
9800PRO are going for $199. Use coupon code 1485 and you get $20 off bringing in the price to $179. If you happen to have an old card (any old card from what I understand), they will credit you another $50, brining the card down to a final price of $129.
You pay $179 out the door and supposedly get credited once they get your old card. I've never tried their trade-up yet, but may jump on this one.
edit:
Sorry didn't read your post correctly. I think you already know of this deal

I would be all over this deal if I wasn't going to upgrade to a PCI-E board in a couple of months.
Or wait for the new 6600GT's to come out for $200 in a month or 2 and then the prices on the 9800's should fall dramaticly as the 6600GT is pretty much on par with the 9800XT and is cheaper. 9700pro is a great card especially for the price.
I would get an old rage card and send it in and get the 9800pro for $129 if that really is possible. Nothing could touch it for that price point.
