Heres how to make your MX510 lighter, so you can be quicker with your mouse, and reduce effort while mousing.
Heres some pics and brief explainations of what to do.
First peel off the lables.
Exposing this.

The red circles show where the screws are. There are 3, the bottom one is sunken.
Heres a pic of the mouse open.

wow...
Here is a pic of the top of the mouse, where the weight is (circled in red).

Remove the weight and the screw (no point in leaving that in there too).
Bam your done. Your MX 510 is now lacking a warranty and is nice and light.

All you need is a:
-Screwdriver = get screws out
-knife = peel lable off
-adhesive remover = get rid of sticky stuff on mouse (not nessesary, but it will get all dirty, ick)
Remember, this will void your warranty. Have fun.

Is this the case with the MX310? Just curious, looks awsome though GJ!
same holds true for the MX500!
I prefer the weight though. I find that the cable has its way with the mouse if its too light.
Nice tutorial! :D

dont know... this is my first logitech mouse, but I was really impressed with it before, now I freakin love it.
Also, there is a small spring in the wheel. On my MX500 i accidentally got it out and lost it, but now the wheel turns silently. I like it more that way. Just thought i'd share that little "mod". lol!
PS: I don't know if it works on an MX510, it may break it, who knows.
never knew that the 510 had that kind of issues, my good old Logi blue mouse is just nice, and light! lol
but i am getting the 510, so this might help, thanks 9mm!

I just did this mod. It makes my MX500 feel much better, but it still has plenty of weight to it.

Great little tip. I took the spring (mine was more like a little wire) of my MX310 and I like the smoothness much better than the clicky feel. Thanks.

im sure this wont void your warranty once you put thw weight back in before sending it out to logitech lol ;)
They might not notice the weight was pulled out if you put it back, but they'll definitely notice the missing labled that you peeled off. More to the point, though - opening the mouse voids the warranty all by itself, whether or not you poke around inside.

Technically it will. You opened it, so its voided, and thats the ethical way of doing things. You break it, tough, you did it.
Also you need to get the stickers off, which will show you tapered with it, so proof of voidage.

anyone ever opened up the MX-700?
does it have a weight as well?
I'd like to remove mine, but don't know if anyone has had any good or bad experiences after doing it with the 700...
i have the Logitech BLACK Optical Desktop shown here:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=23-126-141&depa=0
and i was able to do both modifications. getting at the weight required a bit more disassembly, but i figured it out.
right now, i like the smooth scrolling, but i'll see how i feel after i've been using it for a while.
tall_dallas, if you're talking about the wireless mouse, im pretty certain there will be no weight in there. they only weight the corded mice because theres not much inside. im willing to bet they're trying their damndest to make the cordless mice lighter.

I belive that the "weight" in cordless mice is provided by the battery.

To peel the lable off I simply used the micro screw driver on my leatherman (i love it) to pull up part of the lable, then I pulled it up slowly to keep it in place. The lable is set above the mousing surface (in a dent sort of thing) so it is finy if you scratch it or leave abit of lable/ adhesive on. I used AS ArctiClean to remove the adhesive, because it was right next to me, but most adhisive removers (goo gone) should work fine.
Also you may want to jot down the serial number and product number for futre referance.
