View Full Version : Making a Keychain

I've heard people talk of making their dead CPU's into keychains, and well, I've got about 3 dead T-birds and1 dead Duron lying around and I'd really like to make one into a keychain, but its a lot more difficult than it sounds. I can't seem to drill through 'em, that ceramic casing is a lot tougher than it looks. (too bad the core is so sensitive ;)
Anyways, I guess i'm going to have to go with a loop solution; Just thought i'd bring up the topic and see what you guyz can/have come up with.

Well...first of all, I hate you for having far too much cash to spare...
What were you drilling with? I'm going to make my tbird into a keychain if it is indeed fried, which I'm not sure yet. I was going to go through it with a bit on my Dremel.

Fuzzball, if it makes you feel better, I can assure you that I don't have a lot of cash to spare :) Basically, I just have poor spending habits and a credit card :D Oh, and all the money i do spend is on my computer, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. I tend to look at the bright side, at least i'm not spending all my money on drugs, and i have kewl computer stuuff, even if some of it is broken :D

I would think a cheap masonary bit should go through it with little problem, and make sure to grind those pins smooth. Ouch.

Always being one that likes to read, I looked around a bit on OCP and found out that the CPU die "ate through two diamond bits" in the process of being drilled.... I'm going to have to try this now, just to see if I can do it with just one bit. Having a drill press and lots of machine oil should help out a bit...

All that to get through the die but it takes nothing to crack or chip the core.
I just made a keychain today *check avatar to left*.
I used a diamond dremmel bit and put it in a shallow dish of water to keep the bit & work surface wet. Went like a hot knife through butter, just hold it steady.
To get rid of the pins (if you want to), just snip them off with Xeron cutters (small side cutters) and grind the sharp bits down with a grinding wheel (Dremel or otherwise).
Then canibalize an old keychain and use pliers to put it on (bend the little metal ring to get it off and bend it back together once it's in the CPU hole). Or buy a keychain thingumy from a crafty store.
In place of a Diamond bit, a masonry bit might work. But then again, it IS high temp ceramics so atleast if you mess up you have a few extras to play with :D
hope that helps

Not sure who you were asking Cocytus, but I dont... I just have acess to lots of tools that can come in handy for all kinds of fun(and potentially dangerous to the well-being of my computer) projects.

I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about...
Besides, If we've got dead chips laying around(mine is a duron 600) what else are we supposed to do with them?
