I want to know how to set up win98 so that when it starts it doesn't load a bunch of programs.....you know when you start windows it also launches other programs, the appear as links on the bottom right hand side of your monitor ( beside the time)
I want to change the startup programs so that when win98 loads it doesn't start realplayer, and someother programs.

THis is probably an easy question so can someone help? Thanks :)

goto the start menu, then run
type regedit, then goto
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

in there should be an option for real player and what ever else is loaded at start up. you should be able to recognise the ones you don't want either from the title of the key or from the path it points to. Simply double click the key you don't want and delete the drive letter, this will stop it running but allow you to easily undo the change by putting the drive letter back.

And you can go in Start/Programs/accessories/system tools then click on Maintainance Wizard. You will then have a couple of options for startup applications. Or you could just empty the start/programs/startup folder. (same thing, just with the first option, you can put them back afterwards !) Or you could type in the Start/run dialog box "msconfig" (without the ""), then go in startup and disable what you don't want (this is for troubleshooting, but I always use it like that !)

Hope this helped !

msconfig is a safer way to go with a 98 machine.
