View Full Version : Copper base Taisol, didn't do what I expected!

Just got this Taisol 760092 and lapped it good, see picture.
Well, I set it up with AS2 and put my HCAC(cohesive air cooler) on and started it up.
Problem is now the LCD probe next to the die is reporting a temp of 48.6c and MBM5 is reporting 45. Strange, it used to be the other way arround, MBM5 was slightly higher.
It's also 84 F in the room so it is higher than I like it to be.
It could be that the copper insert is taking on more heat than before and since the LCD probe is real close to it it would get hotter there. I'll have to redo the probe and make sure it is not touching the bottom of the heat sink.
Later I will try to do some comparisons of this heat sink and its little brother, the all aluminum unit.

You could possibly drill a small hole in the heatsink and place the probe in the heatsink in a strategic location. I used this method for inserting a bulb probe into my HSF for my DigitalDoc to monitor.
Im sure this will work for a lcd probe

On my other setup I have a probe in the heatsink and one on the coldplate using flat probe.

PS Nice lapping job. If you want to go all out get a syringe for giving a baby medicine at WalMart and mix up some Artic silver adhesive or Radio shack Thermal Adhesive and inject that goop into the hole after you place your probe in it, this will make the mod permenent and will make you feel better after you just drilled a hole in your perfectly lapped HSF ;)

Wega!

You should really get another fan for that one. I also have it, and my temps went down 5C, when I got a better fan for it.

Nice Lapping work! Did you use anything finer than 1200?

my load temps droped about 5C also.
but you really need to get the delta 38.
I have the old Taisol without the copper and my temps never go over 41. and I idle at 28C.

I read on tomshardwarepage that the swifty "with 53cfm" only beat the taisol by 2 degrees C.

Thanks Walter;
I use a blower as in cohesive air. Does better for me than the high output fans. Also, I can't stand that fan noise. I had an SK6 with a Delta fan. Tried it on my all-aluminum taisol and it did OK, but the noise!!!
With this taisol I got the 26 cfm SUNON but I haven't tried it yet, I will this weekend.

As for the lapping, well, you may laugh at this but I used 600 grit. Now wait a minute, there's more. I have been lapping so many heat sinks that one piece of 600 grit had so much buildup on it that I decided it may act as buffing compound, and it worked. It took more time, but it worked!
