Couple of questions.....I'm not a crazy rich overclocker, so I can't afford any of the top f the line stuff, I'm just a kid =P

Anyways, I'm wondering whats a good cheap and effective way to cool a Duron 900 that will be overclocked.

I'll have the heat sink and fan that they provide (yah, I know, weird though, doesn'tlook like a cheap heat sink)

and a case fan

leave my case open

and....
What's next? Any suggestions for something cheap and will be effective?

I'll give you 10:1 odds this post gets moved to the "cooling" category pretty fast.

It all comes down to a matter of moving the heat off the cpu and getting it out of the case. if you want to run the thing very far above spec, you'll create more waste heat than the stock hsf will be able to remove. Check out the articles on cooling and hsf's and you'll understand the problem a lot better; the hot cpu won't concern itself with your budget, I'm afraid.

I spent $75 on a swiftech, it's for a $160 cpu- although the cpu is cheaper now, the hsf is still the same price. Where I'm going with this I have no idea.

Best you do a bit of studying while you save for proper cooling! You'll maybe find getting there is half the fun.

Yep, Taylor is right, if you start O/Cin with a shoddy heatsink you will only end up with an AMD keychain. Please wait for the money to al least get a $20 Vantec or a $30 Gladiator. I used the low-end Vantec all the way up to 1.466 with no probs.

Well what *is* your budget? I know you're a kid and all, but when i was a kid I cut lawns and cleaned windows for cash....

Give us a ballpark number, and we'll throw out some suggestions.

Yeah Frodo, I was talking to Legolas and Gimli the other day, up at Minas Tirith, and they said they'd been asking Balin and Dwalin about Boromir's box, he's got a p4 2gb@2.5gb, but anyway Boromir sez before we can help, you have to tell us your budget so we can try to offer some suggestions...otherwise you may as well toss your cpu into Smaug's jaws right now, or get a silmaril and do away with windows altogether....

Bah, me and Smaug....we buddies...

anyhoo, I went out ad bought a TT Volcano +6CU H/F 7000 RPM...it's pretty good. I'm making a water cooler (yep with my limited budget), so I'll see how it turns out considering it's pretty much all plastic, (lol), anyho, thanks for your help. still hate my unclockable mobo though....

I once made a heatsink out of beercans, just for the hell of it. I squeezed a bunch of thin pieces of the aluminum together between two flat bars, and fanned them out. It worked good enough back in the K6-X days, but I don't know if it would work too good on a Duron.

that is by far the most original heatsink idea i have heard of. I might have to look at that possibility.

I once made a heatsink out of beercans, just for the hell of it. You mean you used specially imported BMW handlebar shim stock for a heatsink? Oh the humanity.
