Whats up all,
I just wanted to start a thread to help all the people who have this particular chip. Please list any and all your dealings with this chip.Every little bit helps.
I myself am somewhat of an newbee to this great game of Overclocking.Ive had a few other chips and boards to play with:an pentium 3 450@600mhz on an ASUS P2B Rev.10,and an celeron 2.4ghz@3.3ghz on an ASUS P4S8X-8.To say the least I got my hands dirty a few times.
Now im gonna try my hand at this 2.8c 800mhz fsb.I have an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe and from what i can tell this board and an ABIT-IC7 are the best boards for this chip(Please forgive me if I missed a few,I personaly only know of the two.).Ive only had the chip for week and I just got the board 3 days ago so I havent really dug into it yet.Im still somewhat dumb struck on what is the optimal temp for these cpu's.My celeron got all the way up to 124 degrees far.or about 55-60 degrees celcius, that was at 3408mhz on the celeron :bang head .So I backed it back down to 3.3ghz and the temp was about 42-47 degrees celcius
So now with this Northwood 2.8 SL3WJ, ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, and these OCZ's 4400 im hopeing to get as close as I can to that 4 BANGER!!! At the moment im sitting at 3012mhz fsb.@215,memory set@2.5-3-3-6,and voltage is at stock.Still cranking it up,and you know this mann!!! ,will update, check back soon.
I aslo have some questions of my own:
1st-Whats an optimal temp for this cpu?
2nd-Whats the best air cooling solution?
3rd-Whats the highest overclock and on what(air, water,or other)?
4th-Whats the best timing for this type of ram?
and last but not least,
5th What do you think about this setup and how far do you think i can take it.
Thanks a lot peace(catch ya on the rebound)

1. As low as possible. Max ~70-80°C
2. Mine is quite good and quiet, but there are better (but much louder ) ones, like the Thermalright SP - 94 with a Tornado Fan.
3. I guess 3.7GHz is the limit on air, and 4Ghz on phase change.
4. As low as possible (eg 2-2-2-5)
5. about 3.5-3.6Ghz..

See my signature for details. My PC is in the attic and when it gets really warm during summer, ambient temps can rise to above 30C and I need to back down to 250FSB 1.575Vcore to stay 24/7 dual-Prime stable. I'm hoping to be able to sustain 260-265FSB after I get my watercooling setup. (120mm BIX and Swiftech MCP6002 so far) My chip is a 'M0' stepping which is basically a rebadged P4 Extreme Edition but with the L3 cache disabled due to some problem with it. It has 30 caps and a 'soldered-on' IHS. These 'M0' steppings seemed to be better OCers compared to regular 2.8C's when they came out, but nowadays it don't seem to make much difference...

Im gonna give you the heads up real quick before someone gets on their high horse.

First off:

WELCOME TO THE FOURMS
...and the sickness:eek:

Plz do leave out the political commentary.

As for the 2.8c, form what I see people getting. 3.7ghz is about what you will see. The majority of people higher than this are either running very good 3.0c or the are using very high vcore.

From what I hear high vcore kills P4s over long periods of time, so realistically speaking if you are going for 1:1, you should get about 3.7 or so

1. The IC7 reports a little higher than actual, so mid-50's load CPU temp is about the highest I'd recommend when overclocking a Northwood. Obviously, the lower the better.

2. Thermalright heatsinks are about the best air cooling solution. They don't make the SP-94 anymore, but if you can find one of those, snag it. The SLK-948 is good and I've heard good reviews about the new SP-90 too.

3. We can't tell you what the highest O/C possible is with your system. Different CPUs and components O/C differently. It's a gamble at best. The older 2.8C's averaged about 3.4 gig on air, while the ones made last winter average 3.5 or a little more on air. There have been a few of the latest ones that have hit 3.6 to 3.7 gig or so on air. Try it and find out. Water cooling won't see much of an increase, maybe a little more, but not much. Phase change might get you 4 gig if you are lucky.

4. That RAM is good stuff, but as you clock it higher, it will need more relaxed timings. High speed RAM just can't handle tight timings. Personally, I would just use 3-4-4-8 timings at first until you find the limits of your system. Then you can go back and fine tune the timings. Use 2.7v vdimm for now and maybe 2,8v later when you try tightening the timings a little. With the IC7 mobo, it don't like tight RAS to CAS timing, so leave that at 4.

5. You have a good system with good components, but like I said, we would just be guessing about what it might do. Check temps and start cranking. Make sure you have good case ventilation. Good luck.

sorry about that just a little new.
thanks for the feed back people,it really helps when you trying to get the most out of what ya paid for ya know.
so far its been a week and im sitting @ 3289mhz with stock voltage.temp. is 35c(case open).ram set @2.5-4-4-8. once i got above 231mhz fsb i had to up the timing.
Thanks "batboy",not bad for a total of $516.
I have another ? - do anyone know how good this "SL6WJ-pack date 7/04-Malaysia" chip is? Or do anyone know of someone who has one?
Well its time for me to take it up somemore, update cha when I return.

Those generally do pretty good. Your mileage may vary though.

On-One, I just bought a used 2.8C SL6WJ, but this is week 43 of 2003, so it's older than yours. I was able to do 3.2 gig on default vcore and 3.4 gig with 1.6v. I could boot into Windows at 3.5 gig using 1.65v, but it wasn't stable. If you are up to nearly 3.3 gig on default vcore, then yours is better than this one. This one only needs to do 3 gig on default vcore and with stock cooling in the system I'm building for a co-worker.

trying to get the best overclock with default volts.
i figured with these OCZ pc4400 i should at least get 3.6 or maybe im just being a little rash.my mem. is @3-4-4-8 not sure about 0.0v, i think 2.85v? temps are about 50 to 55c under load. when under load my volts drop to1.424 and at norm. its @1.52.do you think i need a volt mod.? please help.
