View Full Version : Anybody using a proxy?

If so, which one?
Last night I went to add another folding machine, a K6-2 500 that was just lying around. I reformatted the hard drive and did a fresh install of W2K. I put a second network card in my primary box and hooked them both to my hub. I installed two different freeware proxies, Proxy Plus and Proksi 1.0. With either of them I can connect to the Web, check my email and about anything else I tried, with the exception of FAH. When I run the console I get an error message that says "bad address for server can't connect, trying again in 5 minutes". This happens even with my firewalls (Zone Alarm) turned off. If I go to my primary machine and run the console from the new box across my network, it connects and downloads work, but the folding takes place on my primary, thus defeating the purpose.
All this will be moot in a couple of days, since I'm awaiting delivery of a router, but I wanted to get started right away.

Have you tried uninstalling the two proxys and using zone alarm by itself? I'm not quite sure I understand why you would need one. Does it cache pages for you..saving you surfing time? That's one of the features of most Proxy Servers along w/ security....gotta look into the software you mentioned.

Also..from time to time, the servers at Stanford go down..so you will see a timeout. Try leaving the console running for a while and see if you get a WU. Good luck! Welcome to the Team :)

Sorry... I guess I didn't explain it very well. Let me back up and say that my ISP (AT&T@Home, formerly Roadrunner) only allows 3 NICs to have access to the net. Since I already have 3 boxes and I'm trying to add a fourth, that box needs to hide behind another IP address. Once I have my router that won't be a problem. What I was attempting to accomplish was to set up my primary machine as a proxy for the K6-2/500 so I could put another folder online right away. I'm not sure if I can do that using Zone Alarm alone. Hmmm. I'll have to try it. Thanks for the advice and the welcome.

You could probably run it -local and to get a protein and then transfer it to the k6- via floppy, making sure to tell it to ask first before connecting. Not sure if that would work or if I left out a few steps. Just thougt it would be easier than setting up a proxy.

I don't think you can mask your ip with Zonealarm.

It would appear that I can't. I was able to download a protein via my Tbird into FAH on the K6 by making the C drive on the K6 a network drive. Once downloaded, though, the actual folding took place on the Tbirdie. If I stopped the action and reopened it on the K6 it would fold there. So I suppose that I could continue this roundabout method for a few days, but it's hardly worth it for the small amount of additional work units it would add, since it would require my intervention to start and stop each workload. Guess I'll wait for the router. Thanks to all who helped.

T.J. you need a router or some type os NAT style software to mask an IP. Just don't let your ISP know they might not be to happy about it. Time to put in the new Celeron and start busting out faster WUs watch out stan here I come lol :)

Easiest way to do this if you are running win 98 on your primary box, is to install Internet connection sharing, and set your primary computer that you have your Cable modem connected to as your Server. What ICS does is this it makes that one computer have the ip and the rest all route through that computer on the same ip, now having not set up ICS it's kinda foggy but all you need to do is install it and run the setup program, that will also ask if you want to make a floppy to configure the rest of your networked computers to connect through ICS you say yes insert the floppy run the exe and away you go. Reboot the whole network and they should all be connecting easy as pie. ICS is included with your WIN 98 CD. Try that out, it's an easy solution until you get your router, at that point pop on and ask. I am sure I can walk you through that too...

J - good luck!

(Speedj) Very Interesting! I'm gonna check that out! Another possible near term (read: lazy) solution would be to run your dos prompt, release the IP on one of your machine's, plug in the other..get a fresh IP, get a unit, etc. It's kind of a pain but I do it cause I only have a 4 port hub currently.

(TJ) Sounds like you know how to release/renew IP's..if not, let me know and I'll give you the commands.

SpeeDj- thanks for the tip. Though I'm running W2K on both machines, I never thought to use ICS to do this. For some reason I thought it was more difficult to set up than one of the freeware proxies. In fact, it's rather simple. I was able to set it up last night with only minimal problems from Zone Alarm (everyone take note: If you use ICS with Zone Alarm you have to change your internet security settings on your host machine to "medium", rather than the default "high"). After that, everything was fine.
This little box did 50 frames overnight, so it will easily complete a 5 credit workunit in 1 day. I've actually started a second instance of FAH on this little machine, but I think that's all it will be able to handle.
Thanks to all who helped, I now have my second box up and running. On to the next one!

Hey TJ, Glad it worked, ICS is one of the little known secrets within the windows OS. Not many people are sure what it does or how to work it. But once it is setup it is an awesome little program, it basically umbrellas all the computers on your network under one IP address, literally spoofing the server. To think of it in another light it is basically a mini router =)

Well I am glad all went well for you now it won't be a big hurry to get your router. The only downside of ICS is this, the main computer can never be turned off only because that is how the rest connect to the net. That was the reason why I purchased a router to make that easier on me. Now I can shut can and reboot any of my computers at random and it doesn't matter which one.

Perhaps this might help some of our other folders out there, or Seti People. ICS is an invaluable tool =)

J - keep on folding!

This is incredible...I set ICS up today in about 1 hour. There's a great writeup here (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics) on how to do it step by step. It's really very easy.

I picked up an old 3Com Hub at work and I now have 5 machines running the internet where before I was only able to have 3 on at a time...YeeHaaw!

Couple of cavaets...
1) The main Internet connection box needs 2 nic cards (for high speed connections..dsl, cable)
2) If using Zone Alarm, you need to turn the internet security connection to "medium" or lower on the main box.
2) Only works with 98se and newer OS' from Microsoft
3) If your using a hub, it needs to have a port that can accept a crossover cable.

Thanks for the tip Speedj...this is awesome..Fold On!!!
