I hate working on budget, pre-builts .

Anyway, I've got this HP Pavilion 554y sitting here. It was loaded with spyware/viruses/adware along with all the useless HP software, so I waxed it starting from scratch. I've put Windows Server 2k3 on the rig for the guy (he refused to have windows xp on there :s) and didn't have windows 2k for him to buy with me at the time.

He's lost the CDs for it which contain the drivers. Everything was recognized fine by the OS except for the sound. It's an integrated chip probably by realtek but I've tried a few and they won't work. Searching around on google has led nowhere, the HP support site says the 554y uses a creative sound blaster 5.1--yeah friggen right.

Anybody got an idea at all? Or should I just keep trying a million realtek drivers out til I find one that works?

go to windows update, sometimes they have drivers, check to see what the sound chip what it says and do a search online, last option is to contact HP and get a recovery disk from them, did you try to install the sound blaster drive, it could be a cripled version they got in there you know.

You should also be able to locate the sound chip on the board. Take a look at chips and post the writing on any of them that you dont' recognize.
