What is a program I can use to moniter how hot the chip is?
One of my friends told me that when he tried using one of those monitering programs his Mobo didn't support it. Is mine capable of supporting a heat monitering program? (Amptron K7-VMA)
What is a good temp to be around at?

Don't know whether your mobo supports temp. sensing, but you can't run your mobo too cool.....
Check motherboards.org (http://www.motherboards.org) for more information.....

I also don't know if your mobo support it, but that should be in the manual. If it has a thermistor for temp monitoring, MBM5 should be able to see it. You can get MBM (motherboard monitor) from here at tweakfiles (http://www.tweakfiles.com/diagnostic/motherboardmonitor.html).

i am not happy ... not happy at all with MBM the temps are all wrong ... i did the settings but still it gives the wrong temps
unless the temps in my bios are wrong but i think the bios temps are the right ones or am i mistaken?
i use hardware monitor ... its an easy program and it works like it should
but i think if you want to use it you will have to have a via chipset

If I'm not mistaked, the temps in bios are as close as you can come to the real temps without drilling the HS and installing a probe. I don't know why MBM didn't work well with your mobo, it seems that most people here use it. I can tell you this though, MBM finds all sorts of probes and things, are you sure you had it set to the right probe? I know you said you worked the settings, but all MBM does is read the reading that the probe is getting. just an idea. :)

yeah i could be wrong but i think i did the right settings ... if i have some spare time i look at it and maybe i can get it to work like it should
but the annoying thing is that there is a list of more than 100 sensors do you have any idea wich ones i have to take for my kt7e ... i found one sensor ... the via 686b and im pretty sure that one is the right one ... but the temp it shows me is extremly cold

I can check the temp in BIOS?

well most motherboards have temp monitoring probes, but I haven't heard of yours so I can't say for sure. Check the manufacturer website for the online manual if you don't have yours, that should tell you...or just get into bios and look for PC heath status or some similar menu.

If its a newer mobo(last year-2 years) it should have built in Hardware Monitoring..but ive been having weirrd problems lately with my Temp testers and voltage testers also- maybe someone can figure out why- On the ATHLON 1.2 i built my friend here are the voltage readouts - Temps are fine- but ASUS Probe which came with the a7m266 mobo says 1 thing- MBM5 agrees with asusprobe- and my Bios Hardware monitor is well away from the 2 3rd party utilities- anyone see if they can figure out how this can happen- i always assumed programs like asusprobe and mbm5 used the bios readings to present to you- or at least they used the same sensors on the mobo....
MBM:
+12v--------- ~16
+5v---------- ~5.7
+3.3v-------- ~3.7
-5v----------- ~ -5.7
-12v--------- ~ -14
Core0------- ~2.0
Core1------- ~2.8
ASUS Probe:
+12v-------- ~14-15
+5v---------- ~4.5-5.5
+3.3v-------- ~3.7
Vcore-------- ~2.0
Bios Hardware Monitor:
+12v--------- ~12.5
+5v----------- ~5.0
+3.3v-------- ~ 3.3
-12v---------- ~ -12.5
-5v------------ ~ -5.5
Vcore--------- ~1.8
need help fast- if it coyuld be the CPU the oem warranty is gone in 4 days..

I just looked up your board on the MBM site here (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/), and it didn't have your board on the list. This doesn't mean it doesn't work with the board, it just means the guy who wrote MBM hasn't got any feedback about that board yet. From the other boards in the KT7 line, it looks like the chip sensor is Via686A 3 or 686B 3, and the case sensor is Via686A 2 or 686B 2. :)

You can try sandra2001 it is usally pretty close to the bios temp
If you have a Via chip I'd use Via's Hardware Monitor program, it works great for me and is very accurit, given the fact I have heat sink grease on my probe and its tight against the back of the core :)

Yay, tomrrow I get my Duron 900...
Okay, I checked the manual, and the mobo does have PC health, so I can moniter the temp.
What is acceptable ranges of temps I should have a couple minutes after the cpu is on?
What is the dengerous ranges?
I'll d/l some monitering programs tonight to moniter the temp. MBM is first on the list. I need some more but mostly ones that give a lot of support...
any good ones?

your gonna get some differing opinions on the temp question, but from what I've read on the AMD forums, when under load, anything above say...50-55*C is pretty hot. depends on if its OCd or not.
I'm still on an Intel chip and I'd cry if mine got to 50*C, but they are a lot cooler than AMD. I think for AMD if you can keep it in the 40s, your doing ok.
btw, chips heat up really fast. If your under load, you could be very close to the hottest its gonna get within a min or two, maybe less.
