My Hitachi 120gb HD is clicking in random patterns whenever I try to read or write from the disk (yes, im sure its the HD). It's about one year old and has never caused any problems. The system has never been unstable or slow either. Do you guys think this hard drive is dying or is the a glimmer of hope that it's not a sign of imminent failure?
looks like something is wrong with the drive. Try formatting it and reinstall windows. If it still clicks, RMA it.
The DFT diagnostic tool for the drive is here:

If the drive is going bad, it will return a code for an RMA.

I have run it and it has detected no problems whatsoever.
I have also tried reintalling windows and that has not solved the problem...
So... RMA?

I'm gonna bump this thread, since I have a similar kind of dilemma with a Seagate HD.
Even my Barracuda (120gb S-ATA) is meant to be very quiet, it is only when I go onto the Seagate site and use their spindown tool to isolate noise.
Otherwise it will make short bursts of clicks and grinds when doing almost anything, even just typing this message it keeps on making them. I can understand the noises if I am scanning the hardrive or using some data heavy application, but it makes them even when idle for hours.
Even when just scrolling down a forum page it will make these noises (it should be loaded into RAM).
When truly idle, it is completely silent, but these noises are kind of annoying. When I compare this to the other system using a Samsuing 80gb ATA hardrive, it is very loud. I have to go right next to the case to hear the access sounds on that HD.

Sounds like you have a working drive. They are supposed to make audible clicking sounds when reading and writing. I can easily hear mine with the case cover removed.

I can hear mine while watching tv in another room, through a corner, even when the case is at the other end of the first room.
Almost 8m through a corner and I can still hear it when its just idling (would start folding if this damn thing kept quiet). :(

That one definately sounds like an RMA candidate.

Sure does, but for some reason the Seagate warranty checker says my warranty ran out on July 9th, even though its a model which has an extended 5 year warranty.
Emailed them, waiting for response.
My sister's pc has a seagate that makes a really high frequency sound to it a lot of the time, its a 40gig 7200rpm baracuda....about 2 months old.....works perfectly though, and the site diagnostics says its fine....so I have no idea why it does that...as for my pc, I have dual 30gigs in Raid-1 (in sig) and an 80 gig.....and I can't hear them doing anything 95% of the time, virtual silence....I can only hear them eeeever so slightly (very dull read noises) if I do some real intense stuff, when they were new I couldn't even hear them doing that stuff, one is Baracuda III and one is a Baracuda V......lasting forever......our 160gig drives in our server (also in sig) do make a bit of noise when they're working, but it sounds normal.....and they've been running forever just fine too.....I still wonder what the high frequency thing is all about though...and a 40 gig in our video editing pc (the boot drive) is about 2.5 years old....and it sometimes makes a squacking noise....like the sound a non-oiled motor would make, but its very faint....and it keeps working....so no idea on that one either.

My bro's WD ata 100 5400 rpm 60gb drive (dont knwo its code name hehe) randomly locks the pc up during Regular HDD cleanups with diskcleanup and disk defragmentor.
I think His hdd is bad altho i hate RMA'S maybe i should just buy a new HDD for him and RMA the other drive so i can have a spare hehe
Been mailing back and forth with Seagate, and they say my drive is not in warranty anymore (bought 2nd Q of 2003).
How do they know this you might ask?
Well, they say that the serial number I give them is out of warranty. Does this make any sense, since a shop could be selling these drives a year from the first ones being shipped out? Does this mean that it is the resellers responsibility to cover for any defects?
My warranty label states that it was bought 6/2003, and then 2W (warranty of two years).
