I just met this guy in the local sportscard store and I found out he lives only 2 houses from me....

Here's the BUG:

We got talking about how we both have Verizon DSL and he is gettting avg. 900 kbs download while my best ever has been 505 kbs!

the only difference we could come up with is that he has a 3com NIC and I have Netgear FA 310 tx. He also has Win Me and I have Win 2000 (I had 505kbs when I used to run Me). He hasn't tweaked anything and I've tweaked everything (rwin, MTU, etc.)

Grrrr

Why why why!!

Did you verify that you both have the same level of service as well? He may have a 128/1.54 while you have a 128/768. If you guys are on the exact plan, then I would say theres some line degradation from your house to the C/O. You may be 2 houses apart, but your line isnt shared.

Get this, my brothers neighbor has DSL but he cant get it because he's too far away! :D Kinda shows you how things work.

Yes.. we both have the same level of service and I'm the one closer to the C/O! Could it be in my internal phone line or is it more likely outside the house? Could the different NIC make such a differnce in speed?

Call your telco and ask them to test the line quality because your fax machine is not receiving faxes properly and your voice service is shoddy. It's an old trick I've used because telco's don't care about your Internet speed. Fax and voice they do care about.

Your NIC, whether its 10 or 10/100 isnt going to make that much of a difference between the speed variances you see. The phone co. trick about poor faxes works ok if your on an analog line, but you aren't. I called Verizon when I had issues with my DSL and they were more than happy to help me out, turned out there was a problem somewhere. (my line would drop once or twice a day)

If there's a problem with the physical line the telco is the only one who can help you. You could call the DSL provider and tell them what's going on and maybe they can help you. However, if they determine there's a physical problem with the line then they're just going to call the telco anyways.
