I want to try to convince my parents to get me a laptop. What good brands are there besides those like dell, sony, etc? I recently heard of pctorque, and it seems like thier laptops are way cheaper than a comparatively equipped laptop anywhere else. also, i really like the "xbrite" screen sony has. does any other manufacturer have something similar under a different name?

Not sure on the xbrite, but for high quality laptops IBM and Sager are supposed to be very very good.

with laptops it really depends on what you are going to use it for and what you value. I've heard from a number of people that IBM is the best, but you pay for it. I also hear that pctorque is a great place to buy a laptop. They also have a notebook forum which could be useful as well. As far as the screen goes, the newer fujitsu screen is supposed to be better than the Sony.

ibuypower's are great deals. For 1000$, you can get a decent 4-lb Centrino-based notebook, and for about 1300$ you can get a laptop with a 9700 Pro and and AMD64 3000+ processor.

is fujitsu an oem supplier to any other companies, or do i have to by a fujitsu branded laptop?

How much are you looking to spend? That will make a big difference? Also, do you want a svelt laptop (4 lbs?) or do you care if it's a bit heftier (7 lbs?).

One thing I can tell you is that AMD's laptop CPU's get HOT. After I had a duron, I have gone with Intel every time.

On the low end, Toshiba's Satellite models do pretty well.

I have played around with a few Averatec's and they seems to be very nice and well made.

I will agree, the Sony screens can't be beat :attn: But The new Toshiba's screen's are very similar.
