Hi,

I'm running on my notebook an Athlon XP-M 2800+ (it's the weird chips with the disabled 64bit architecture, with a tiny 128 L2 cache)

Anyways, right now, there is a 256 MB DDR stick installed with another slot for upgrading up to 1256 MB.

I'm not going to spend half a grand (Can) to get a 1 GB stick, so I can get a 512 MB or under. How much do you guys think is a good amount to get? 512 MB or 256 MB? Is 512 MB overkill?

Also, what does the PC# mean? For example, I see PC2100, PC2700, PC3200.

One last thing, are Crucial or Kingston good brands for memory?

If price is an issue and you're not gaming then go with another 256 mbs. For everyday use you don't really need more than 512. If money is no object then get as much as you can afford. Crucial and Kingston are both good brands.

Crucial vs Kingston...which one?

Also, what's up with the PC#?

No real pref. for Kingston vs. Crucial, sorry.

stolen chart (cite below)

"Actual clock speed/effective transfer rate

100/200 MHz => DDR200 or PC1600
133/266 MHz => DDR266 or PC2100
166/333 MHz => DDR333 or PC2700
185/370 MHz => DDR370 or PC3000
200/400 MHz => DDR400 or PC3200
217/433 MHz => DDR433 or PC3500
233/466 MHz => DDR466 or PC3700
250/500 MHz => DDR500 or PC4000
267/533 MHz => DDR533 or PC4200
283/566 MHz => DDR566 or PC4500"

A better explanation than I could give you is available there, under the heading "DDR Memory Speeds"

Hope this helps
