IE and Firefox borth wont access websites

I recently was cleaning up a computer for a friend, I did the normal, ad aware/ spy bot, but then went into safe mode and also deleted all temp internet files and such. This person had alot of malware/spyware and a few virus's. after it was all completed, i went to get online, and found that i couldnt access any browsers....IE and Firefox both load like im not online but programs like AIM and IRC run fine, if anyone has any insight into this at all it would be great.

So far ive tried deleting content.IE5, and restoring to no avail because restore doesnt work...

Also, ive installed sp2 recently, but i had IE working after sp2 so...

Try looking in the HOSTS file. see if there is anything there thats not supposed to be you can locate it in

windows/system(32? or system i ferget)/driver(s)

something like that
