One of my friends gave me an old box and I'm trying to get it up and running. I'm trying to figure out exactly what chip it has installed in it. On the top it says:
IBM (logo)
IBM 6x86
and across the bottom it reads: IBM26 6x86-2v2100GB

When you flip it over and look inside the pin array it says:
1995 CYRIX
IBM9314 Q06008
50H8654 PQ

It is on a socket 5 M/B in an Acer case ( desktop ) Aspire I Think.

What do I have here and will it fold ?

I know nothing about CYRIX

My guess is probebly a 486 33 or 66 mhz. I had a cyrix chip and it was the same same.I bought it for an upgrade from a 386 to a 486 was many years ago.

you can probably put a pentium something chip in there, they sure are cheap

Oh well, it looks like it is a no go on the folder. Maybe I can use it as a server when I network. Or maybe it will be the first box for my B/W cluster. Or maybe a boat anchor....... :D

It was a nice gesture on his part. I was telling him about F@H and he asked me if I wanted it to put it to work.

It could always Genome or look for aliens :D on top of being a server. Don't think either has a time limit.
Didn't those chips run really hot or something? Thought I remembered something like that.

Now there's a good Idea. I'm so into folding I didn't even think about Genome of Seti.

I don't know how hot it is going to run as I havn't been able to get any life out of it yet. Not even a post. I might be looking for a new chip anyway. If I can find an old pentium 133 or 233 for cheap ( a couple of bucks ) I might try one just to see if the board will handle it. I just need to figure out the jumper settings.

This is new stuff to me...If it aint AMD I'm not real sure about it. I went from 486dx to AMD k6-300 and never looked back.

Cyrix chips are legendary for running hot. Default voltage on an M2 is 2.9 v core compared to 2.2 for AMD chips. But with a modern socket A HSF on there, OC should not be a problem.
