View Full Version : Compaq case cooling question ?

I OC'ed my compaq (the one in my signature), and I am pretty bored of the sound of the stupid HSF. I want to close my case, but I just don't want to fry the chip with overheat (I donno the temps !). So I thought about putting 2 fans (one "air in" and one "air out"). Would some old small pentium 1 or 2 cpu fans work ? the circled part of the pictures are where I thought putting the fans.

Sorry, didn't put the pics !
Here is the first one :

PS : sorry if the writing sucks ! My mouse isn't so good ( old logitech/compaq one !)

I wouldn't be two worried about CPU heat with such a mild overclock. Just make sure you have a thin layer of thermal paste. Maybe a big el cheapo heatsink (http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/1/8.htm?175), just to be sure. If you are super concerned about CPU temps, you can run an Xacto knife under the edges of the aluminum plate on top of the CPU to expose the die (it will look just like an Athlon/Duron as AMD K6-2/3 were flip chips too).

The problem is Compaq (maybe not them, but I say them cuz the PC is from them so ...);) glued up the CPU and the HSF together (that's why I am asking to know if it will be OK !). Plus, the default voltage of the chip was 2.4v, and I increased it to 2.6v (to make it stable)

Run an Xacto knife under the edge of the plate (between the thin aluminum plate and the ceramic pin grid array) You can cut about 3/8 of an inch in under the plate without worrying about hitting any resistors. Once you cut the silicone like glue that is holding the plate to the pin grid array, gently pry up on the plate(the thing that the HSF is glued to), as there is some of the same siliconish glue between the plate and the CPU die (but because the die is like glass, the silicone just barely sticks to it).
I hope you give this a shot, but remember, be very carefully!

If I only cut that epoxy/silicon between the heatsink and the heatspreader, and I keep the heatspreader on, then I put on a socket a hsf, will it work ?
Thanks !
omg. dood i had i compaq once, but then i beat it with a hammer and baseball bat. serioulsy, if your gonna buy a premade comp, get a at least a dell or alienware or soemthing. but better yet, build your own. really cheap and fast!

Already had this comp, bought it about 2 years from now. Just trying to OC it to get more power from it !

Thanks ! You might be able to slip a razor in between them. If you can, and you seperate the two, all you would then have to do is lap the heatspreader. But I don't think it can be done, as they likely used very stong epoxy.

Some people in the forums said that putting the cpu/heatspreader/hsf in the fridge would make the epoxy less strong. Would it be weak enough for me to separate it from the heatspreader ?

i have the model above yours with the 475 chip same config and every thing I think. model 5441
so your saying i can take the heat plate off. sweet id do that and then get some AS II on it
and if your going to OC it more get a better case. i just converted an old full AT tower to fit the mobo
and i plan on a biger PSU becuase the one it i allready blew up by haveing 3 80 mm fans on it
i had my 475 at 560 for a while 5 * 112 it wasnt stable becuase of heat. q3 ran for about 15 mins the went to desktop
is yours a GA-5SMM
mobo to ?

I don'T think so. Here's a pic of my mobo (to compare it with yours)

nope not a GA-5SMM mobo
if i where u id find out it is and flash the bios like i did
right now the only thing compaq is one of my moniters
yours probably is a giga-byte board
www.giga-byte.com look their ;)

Didn't find it. How do I know which company made my board ? Where shall I look on the board for the model number ? BTW, it has a sis 530 northbridge and sis 5595 (sumthin like that). Just checked in Sandra 2001, in the CPU and BIOS section, and it said under BIOS that my board was made by compaq. And when I click on Mainboard information, there is a "fatal error occured, program must shut down blah blah blah speech".

its not made by compaq. my mobo has a SIS 530 ship set its mostlikely made by giga-byte trust me take out the whole mobo if u have to,m and look. mine said right on it

And where should I look to find out who made it ?
BTW, the CMOS is (I think) made by compaq. (at least, in the top, like in the menu bar, it says COMPAQ COMPUTER CORPORATION ...)

Are you sure that you need to increase the voltage just for that 25 mhz oc? Cause if you system is stable without the extra voltage, you are better of with the heat management.

I need that 2.6v. At 2.4, the PC doesn't post, at 2.5v, it crashes with BSODs, so the stable position is 2.6v

near the IDE controlers / conectors
2.4 on a 450 no way i run 2.2 at 500 i forget what the stock for 475 was but for 550 to be bootable i was at 2.7 and for 560 3.2 v
so your sure i can cut the glue and take off the heat plate?

Is it on some kind of sticker ? I have one which says "MUSTANG-S". BTW, I had to put the voltage at 2.7v to get it at 500 MHz

Hey now, overclocking is about making do and maximizing the performance for what you have. This is what he's got.
We all had that first prebuilt box.... he's taking the first steps in a long journey... :)

Oh, forgot to add, a little case cooling can never hurt. Rather than putting some wimpy fans in it though, spring for some good 80MM or 60 MM fans. I'd also recommend removing that stock HSF - but we've talked about this before. Dimmreaper suggested a good HSF.... I'd recommend a FOP32 personally, but hey.

One problem is the hsf (cpu) is half under the PSU. So there are about 40 cm between the current hsf, which is about 40 cm too. Would there be enough space for the new HSF ( the vantec, the FOP32 or any other ) to fit in there ?
Thanks

just mount the PSU out side of the case i did this . it gives u much more room inside of that "compaq" case . be carefull how ever i blew mine up ( sparks/smoke ) but thats becuase i think i was runing to much off of it. so in other words new case with biger psu will help u alot
this is my mobo

i agree with dimmreaper, you don't have to be worried about your temps with such a minor overclock
