Hi all

I sucessfully killed my 6800gt with an NV5 Silencer. I own(ed) a PNY 6800GT that had great temps. I am getting into the silent PC cooling arena & the 6800 fan is very terrible with regard to noise level. Carefully removed factory sink. I was kind shocked that they have you remove & leave off a back heatsink that cools a couple of chips. Very carefully using the supplied TIM installed the cooler being very careful not to get any TIM where it should have. Carefully screwed in the sync till the grommets bulged. After install my idle temps from default went up 10 degrees. I was OK with that. Ran Doom3 in minutes I was up to 92C!!!! Took of sync saw that GPU was only making partial contact. Carefully added a very small amount more to the gpu. Attached back the sink. Sirens from my system. Check leveling for the 50th time. Looks good. Did a total clean & reapply if TIM. Same thing. Reinstalled default heatsink. Same thing. Through some trickery was able to get it replaced for 60 bucks (thank god but still sucks). So I am back to a 6800GT. Any recomendations besides sucky Arctic- Cooling to quiet the beast? Want to take my silencer & smash it with a hammer :-) This is more a warning for you guys BE CAREFUL.

it doesn't sound like you killed it at all, just sounds like the HS never got seated correctly. killed = not workable.

So wait? is the card dead or what? Im on stock cooling myself and plan to buy the copper HSF upgrade from eVGA. I think you will be alot happier with that.

Also what sirens were you getting?

It was to the point it would not boot at all. I did a lot of reseating etc. The card is dead. Does anybody know if a 6800GT will boot with no heatsink? Lucky I pulled a swap trick & have a new one (thankfully). I would fear the NV5 silencer.

Don't blame the silencer for your fault. I run a silencer on my x800 myself and it's 20 degrees cooler than before under load and idles at 35 degrees.
If they are mounted correctly they rock!

Yeah, the silencer is one of the best investments I have made lately (other than my A64 and x800pro :D ).

I believe that it was not my fault at all. I am very anal about procedure in any modding I do. It sometimes takes me twice the time to do anything as I check recheck & never do anything "ghetto". You are asking a base to contact 7 different points on the card (6 memory chips & cpu). When I took apart the stock cooler depsite it "cheesiness" it had a lot of thought. Mainly the fact that the memory being a different height than the GPU had an independent heatsink. I am glad you had sucess with your silencer. Maybe the design of the ATI ones is better? I realy think this product was "rushed" to market. The base on it was horrible & did not lend to lapping due to the screws protruding. I have heard rumors of a Rev 2 silencer. Makes me believe "what is wrong with rev1?"

8/10 times computer problems are do to user error. There are plenty of people out here who crack cores and wreck mobos due to improper hsf/cooling installations no matter how many times they re-try. It doesn't necessarily mean there is a bad product. Also it's very interesting to point out the "problems" with Artic Cooling for their NV silencer, yet you have no problem exchanging your dead card for something not covered by warranty. Ironic? The fact is that modding/overclocking/advanced computing is not a perfect science, and we all mess up from time to time. Next time don't be so quick to point the finger at a company when your own methods are questionable.

At that point you should've known for certain that something was wrong. Why didn't you check your mounting job then?

You were not present during my install. I told you I was careful. I am far from a noob Deception.

I was exceptionally dilegent in checking my contact. On a gpu based heatsink is is hard to tell sometimes. It is hard to see between the gpu & sink. I followed the tightening instructions etc per the Arctic cooling supplied instructions. I checked then checked again & then checked again before install. I have been around & around working in IT deployment & have personally built thousands of PC's. I have installed the ATI Arctic Coolers on 9700's at least 10 times. I just really think the NV5 silencer is a piece a poop. I actually think if you look at the base it of very poor quality. I am totally not against taking a fall for a problem of my own doing. I ripped a ramsink and the ram with it off on a 9700 once :bang head . I learned my lesson. I checked it believe me. I thought my deligent preperation & exact following of the instructions would be enough. For the cost of the product I was disapointed with the sink lapping. If you compare to the cheapest Thermalright heatsink contact area to the NV5 their is no comparison.

On another note has anybody tried "alternative" methods of cooling their 6800? I look at this NV5 & I am scared to try it again. I got away with a 60 dollar store swap once. Afraid to temp fate again.

PS. The Arctic cooler 6 year warranty. I am sure it doesn't cover the card what is the point?

i think the point 9mm was making is that you voided your CARDS warranty the moment you removed its heatsink, and you pulled a "swap trick" to get a new one.

this type of thing is generally frowned upon on these forums.

Yes.

There are risks of overclocking and modifing hardware. Those risks are death of expensive components. You mod something or run it out of spec and you accept those risks.

Even if it not your fault the warrenty is still void, so its your problem.

And a "swap trick" sounds rather fraudulent to me.

Yea, some poor person is going to get a card that was cooked as a refurb or we will wind up paying one way or another for all the retarted RMA's from things like this. Live and learn, but not at someone elses expense. If I returned everything I FUBAR'ed I'd have a few extra working PC's right now. I am guessing you wont get very many helpfull replies.

This thread should probably be closed. Most people aren't going to have very kind words after you just stated that you've commited fraud in order to replace something that you knowingly broke.

I'm sorry, but you have misunderstood me. I never implied that you are a newb, but at the same time did imply that the error was most likely on your behalf. Even the most skilled of modders and overclockers run into problems; this is something that simply cannot be avoided. There are people that have been doing this for years (including myself and probably you as well) that have and always will run into problems from time to time. You shouldn't take the first message so personally as it is universally accepted that accidents can and will occur. Instead, you should think twice about the things you choose to post here, like "swap tricks" and others stuff than can have you censored.

Here's my two cents........

Firstly I have to agree that the NV5 Silencer isn't that great, I've seen review of the thing that had the same problems that you mention, so I agree that it's poop considering it's cost.....

Secondly though, It's bang out of order what you did, in my book it's THEFT. At no point was the card at fault, it was either your STUPIDITY or a crapply designed sink you put on it. If you wanted justice then maybe your should have talked to the block manf. about compensation, but no you went and screwed over a retailer, when that card gets sent back to PNY they'll not honour any rebate due to the supplier......

I hope you feel happy you've just screwed a company out of around $300 because of YOUR ACTIONS. Or maybe you screwed PNY directly, and WE overclockers will all have to pay extra for our next vid card...... CHEERS MATE

SHAME ON YOU.

I guarantee you that someone in this thread will never see the classified section here once they hit 100 posts.

With that said, sorry to hear about your misfortune but only honest people get to utilize our For Sale/Trade area of this forum.
