View Full Version : Farewell Mr. NoName PSU

Well, after about a month of intermittant trouble with my current no-name-brand-found-anywhere-on-it power supply, it finally refused to power up. So I went ahead and ordered a Fortron 350w for my aging computer <carefully pets her side so as not to induce arthritic inflammation>
After all the good things I've heard about Fortron here in the Forums I figured it would be a good idea to spend half the money it would take to get an equivalent Antec (at least locally around here.) Unfortunately I've had to put my old 230w Powerman in just to get me by until it arrives <sigh>.
It's funny, after installing the 230w my temps went up to 55 degrees idle! I'm hoping it's because I was too lazy to tuck all the wires behind the board, and not because I jostled the SLK-800 (they are heavy suckers after all.) We'll see once I get the Fortron in there, it's got a 120mm fan so I'm hoping to see at least a bit of a temp drop. If not I'll just have to reseat my HS hehe...
The temp increase could come from the powersupply. As it is struggling to provide enough power and giving a lot of extra heat in the process.

That's what I was thinking. That combined with my cabling mess hehe ;)
Good stuff on getting that no name PSU outta there. I had a no name have a cap explode and kill an 8x Burner(this was back when 8x was the fastest :bang head).
Yep, I read your thread and finally decided to get rid of mine too. I have been using my no name 350W that came free with my case for about 5 months now. The rails were stable, but I sometimes wondered after my computer would randomly freeze.
No more wondering now. I bought the Fortron 530W from the Egg and I have a very good feeling about this psu.

Glad you found a solution to your problem. great choice going
with Fortron.
One thing's for sure ... not all PSU are created equally.
The labels on the side are basically useless unless you
know a few more details, like at what temperature the
specs are rated.
Two units with exactly the same watt/amp specs
will react very differently under the same load.
A 550w PSU might be able to put out 550w
at room temp (25c). But when you fire it up and the insides get up
over 35c it may drop well below 400w.
leave that poor thing alone. how would you like to get stressed like that.im sure iwouldnt . what do you think of this is it messy or acceptable.not that im leaving it like this just im using the video card. http://groups.msn.com/aggressiveinlineskating/gttechheadquarters.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=170

Duo007, is it just me or did you just post this same question about your case in This thread (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?p=3102053#post3102053) thread 5 minutes ago?
Not trying to be a pain, but let's try to keep threads clean and flowing with information pertinent to the subject.
Thank you [/public service announcement] :)

Either he really wants comments or he's just spamming.
Have you gotten your new PS ManOman? I'd like to hear your results. I ordered a new Antec for my backup rig the other day, but I've had my finger on the trigger of a Fortron 530w PSU for the past few days.
My Fortron 530W is supposed to come in today, so I'll be posting results by tomorrow hopefully. I have work Friday morning, but the afternoon is free. Hopefully my overclock will be boosted to new levels, but my cpu will have to break out of the slump, because my ram is completely maxed out.

Nope, haven't gotten it yet.
<squints and looks out his window facing west> It's still in Indiana
Hopefully it'll be here tomorrow and I can get that sucker in before work for a bit of testing :)
I'm hoping my OC can go up a few levels as well seeing as how I haven't even added any extra voltage to my T-Bird yet :)
i really want you guys comment. what do i win outa spamming! some phucking post count. come on!
^ well for some people trying to access the classifieds, that's the entire point. But yeah, that case is extremely messy, not that I can say much, because mine is pretty bad too. I just don't care that much, because it only raises my temps by like 1-2°C so, when I'm at 44°C full load usely, it doesn't matter much, and just takes a lot of time, because I'm always taken stuff in and out.

<and now back to the story at hand...>
Came home from work looked all around, but alas, no shiney white FedEx box. <sigh> Oh the humanity! :eh?:
Well, I got my box yesterday. It was this huge cardboard box that was four times the size of the psu. I guess they couldn't find any other one. Anyway, opened it up, and out popped this shiny gold psu, beautiful I must say. Removed the old piece of junk and put the new one in, which took a while because I had to try to organize all of the cables.
After that, I tried overclocking. My max fsb hasn't changed a bit, but my overclock voltage needs dropped by .05, I went from 1.875 to 1.825V, so I'm pretty happy about that. I'm going to try to reach 2.7 again and see if I can use a lower vcore than 2.03V this time.

So here I sit on Monday morning, aimlessly swinging my legs in my chair as I wait.
Unfortunately on Friday, FedEx didn't try to drop off until almost 4:00, almost two hours after I left for work <sigh>
For some reason they didn't try to deliver on Saturday (they would in Virginia, hmmm...)
So I'm hoping today that they'll try to drop off earlier so I'll have a chance to get the sucker in before work, and I can see what kind of temps I have after 8-10 hours of running straight :)

Well the PSU arrived late yesterday, about 10 minutes before I had to leave for work of course.
I think it goes without saying that I didn't have any time to get it in and jump up and down in my best imitation of a giddy schoolgirl, but I did have that opportunity this morning :D
So I took the side off the case to take the old supply out, and as I was removing the screws in the back I noticed what really could be causing quite a problem with my temps. The heatsink had fallen off of my video card and was hanging by one post. MSI and their cheap-as-heck plastic mounting posts!! <sigh> So I resecured that, all the while wondering why the card hadn't just fully given out yet.
I ran all of the wires behind the drive cages, and under the top rails to keep them out of the way, and put the side panel back on with a big grin spreading across my face. Btw, the jumping around like a giddy schoolgirl happened earlier this morning when I first got out of bed and remembered that I had a Fortron to install :D
So here I sit now, with my temps around 8 degrees lower, but still around 50c, so it looks like I'm going to remove the SLK-800 and clean, then reinstall it to see what kind of temps I get then. Unfortunately that probably won't happen for a while at best seeing as how I'm too hooked on Mario Sunshine to be gaming on my comp right now anyway hehe... ;)
