What to you defrag with?

What program(s) are you using to defrag?
The stuff that comes with windows sucks....
Right now i am using diskeeper, seem to like it, very fast(over windows defrag)

So got a better on for me to try?

Win2K actually uses the defrag from DisKeeper. It's stripped down but was built by them for Microsoft.

Oh, and DisKeeper is what I use as well.

I've used Ontrack's "JetDefrag" and it seems to work well but I have since switched to Disk Keeper.

I like some of the other software that comes with Ontrack's System Suite 3.0 and it always seems to rank up there as good or better than Norton's and McCafee's software.

I have used both diskkeeper and norton speeddisk. I like speeddisk better.

except for antivirus, of course, thats ok when istalled in its sleekest and stripped-ed-ist of forms :)

I also use norton, I only use that because it puts the swap file at the beginning of the disk, if the standard ms defrag in win98 did that then I would use that instead as there isn't much between them

Every time that I have tried to use a Norton product it has screwed something up on my computer! Needless to say I don't use them anymore.

Oh man I'm so glad you guys started this post , I've been using Windows defrag it takes like an hour and a half with no performace increase that I can see. I actually have Norton System Works 01 but never bothered to use anything other than the antivirus and the deleted file recovery software. I just ran the Norton defrag and it was so bad I think it said it was 95% defragged or something , its hard to believe I just used the windows defrag yesterday.

didnt know 2k used a nutred version of diskeeper...
havent played with it 2 much in 2k...
my main rig is still 98SE, others are 2k though, i think its time for an upgrade.

I use the one that comes with WIN ME. Doesn't WIN ME have the same one as W2K? Why does the first defrag (fresh install of windows) with Me or W2K take like an hour and ne defrag after that is like 15 minutes?

question: do any defraggers actually use logic? That is... not simply moving files into a single space on a disk... but actually group the files that are usually accessed at some time?

Example: say Photoshop has 100 files which are read and loaded at boot time... will all those files be placed "one after the other" or "sequentially" on the disk to really speed it up? If defrags don’t use logic, it can actually makes things worse… theoretically…

The only real "defrag" is a fresh install ;)

I dont use defrag, or scandisk, chkdsk etc.
Havent in years, they dont make any visible difference and my machine is lucky to make it 6 months without getting a re-load of the OS anyway.

Scandisk is more useful than defrag though, although I dont think it really ever fixed anything, it at least told me windows was stepping on itself and I was getting close to a format.

i would say you are giving bad advise if you tell people not to defrag.. A defrag does and has been proven to help inprove disk speed. here is a simple example of how it helps.... you have to find 5 things in your house, would it be faster to find then if they were all over, or all in the same room on a desk?

Then again, I'm that guy that doesnt use home firewalls or port watchers, virus scanners etc... So add defrag and scandisk to the list and alot of people might disagree with my advice :)

i like to avoid reinstall as long as i can, honestly.

defrag DOES help alot with WinME... especially after i D/L 30Gb of crap.
for one who always likes to "keep it fresh" i can see where all those things mentioned above would be senseless, so Paiynn i see your point as well.

Has anyone got any opinions of "Perfect Disk" ??
i have it installed, but the visual it gives does'nt impress.
i'm wondering if the proggie is any good at all?

I am with you on the firewalls, port watchers and virus scanners..
(they slow yous system down and are not worth using with a small lan at home) If you want into my home cpmputers, just ask for the IP.

Regarding the defrag isue... looks like we are going to have to agree to disagree on the subject :)

From what I know the defrager just fills in all the holes where data has been deleted making more space on your hard drive. Back when you only had 600mb hard drive a defrager would move the data around so you'd could get another 10mb outa it.

I use the same software and it seems to be pretty good. The 'Internet Cleanup" utillity is a joke but I have not found one yet that can get rid of the hidden DAT files that windows stores. But that is another thread. Here is the link for you.

I took a look at their site and there is not much in the way of "Trial Versons" of their software. This link will take you to the "System Suite 3.0" section which is the software that I use. Down in the bottom lefthand corner there is a software info section that has a link to free software but they do not have anything that great there.

I have used Diskeeper (Lite) and its great for NT, 2K's has it stripped down and works ok.

I use Fix-It Utilities also and IMHO it is a bargain!

I do NOT defrag all that often though, since I usually screw something up every few months and end up with a clean install again!
