Hi clockers,
I have a Asus P5a SUper 7 motherboard (aliAladdin V AGPset).
I use a amd K6 3 450 Mhz processor. I've tried to find some info to overclock my system. I couldn't find the right guide.
Maybe some of u know a guide or have some information for me.
Thx

What do u want to know about overclocking that CPU?
If I can remember right the Max. temp of that CPU is 70C or so...
the Vcore is 2.4.
My K6-III's vcore is 2.4 too when I set it to 450 with 2.7 Vcore it loaded windows and BSODed me...
If u want to overclock this kind of CPU u'll have to go with Vcores and that's why you will have to use very good coolers to keep the CPU cool

And welcome to the forums BTW;)
you find little info on K6 series because they were poor overclockers... a 450 might yield 500-550 with a FSB and Vcore increase... but that will be alot for that chip.
cooling is essential.
RAM and cards that will handle your FSB at say 112 is also important.
the chip should take up to 2.8v no problem,
higher than that is Not good... and COOL it!!!!!
as even 2.4v makes them puppies hot!!!
a socket A cooler will work, and is what i'd recommend.

I dont have a k6-3 but i have had a k6-2 450 running at 550 for liek 6 months no problem. it will post and run 99% fine at 600 but i was getting wierd errors once in awhile.
i couldnt adjust the fsb on my pos msi 5169 so its running at 5.5x100 at 2.5 v

I have the same mother board, just out of interest how did u get it to 600 I thought the Max was 5.5 x 100?
I got a K6-III 400 running at 428 with 2.5Vcore
on 450 with 2.6 wont load into windows
@ 2.7 loads windows and displays BSOD
didn't want to go higher on voltage cause I got a crappy cooler on it
What did u get with ur K6-IIIs?

if you have the newer bios version set the multiplier to 2x and it actually is 6x

yes, i have 3.7 and the 2 acts as 6.
by the way to even post at 6x100 i had to use 2.7 volts hehe was a pain to keep that k6-2 450 cool @600

Thx, for the reaction, coolest and others.
I'm new in the overclocking business. A friend already told me that a k6 III can't be overclocked a lot.
I'll buy a better or an extra cooler and set the Vcore to 2,7.
I hope it will hold untill I have the money for a new PC that enters the Ghz area.
Thx

was talking to my brother inlaw this morning, he is running his k6-3 450@550 with no problems at 2.6v so i would think you could do the same....

Thx Welcome to the forums.
Setting the Vcore to 2.7 is about the max for a standard K6 CPU. However if you have a "+" series CPU, the default Vcore is 2.0 and I'd be very cautious going above 2.5v.
As said in the above posts, if you expect to have any kind of successful results overclocking that CPU, make sure that you have good cooling. If you're not aware, a socket A hsf will fit the socket 7 CPU provided that you adequate clearance around the CPU. I've had good results with the Global Win FOP32 on my K6III+450@616MHz.
Another tip that may help get you over the hump with that CPU is to "CAREFULLY" remove the metal cap covering the core of the CPU.
There were an increased number of questions about these CPU'S a few weeks ago. Most of these issues were addressed at that time. Look back through the recent threads and I'm sure that you'll find enough reading on this CPU to keep you busy for at least a couple hours.
Good Luck!

Thx, i'll pump up the Vcore to 2,5 and I buy a good cooler.
Thx for the tip about the metal cap, but I don't want to take to much risk.
Thx anyway.
ps: this is really a nice site :)

Yeah i just got rid of my AMD K6-2 500 - the K6-2/K6-3 series chips were - again - very poor overclockers - I could not get it stable by raising the multipier at all! I had a dud - very bad performance - but i could do this: lowered the Multipier to 4.5x from 5.0 - and rasied the FSBB from 100 to 112 - giving me 502 - dont laugh if i showed you my old benchmarks for the difference - you'd be surprised the differencei t makes :)

Here's a guide you can use for the K6-3: K6 OC guide (http://www.aceshardware.com/Spades/read.php?article_id=108) If you have board rev 1.04 or ealier, and flashing to the 1011beta4 bios, you can run the K6+ version. Which has been known to overclock to 600+. I have a K6-3+550 running at 600, on a Tyan S1598. Which is max for the board, but not the cpu.
