Maybe someone can help me with this. Recently I keep getting a "Beta Directdraw expired" please update message whenever I go to play D3D games. Does anyone know what this is and how or where can I download the update. I can't find anything on it. Thanks.

You didn't mention which OS you're using or the version of DirectX you're having problems with, but I would try re-installing the newest version of DirectX. One or both of the following two files were probably overwritten by earlier versions or are corrupt...ddraw.dll and ddhelp.exe (both reside in the windows\system directory)

You can download the latest version from here...

I need help with this also.

Direct X 8.1 windows ME on one system.
8.1 and Windows 98 another system.

I tried to reinstall the same 8.1 but didn't work.
it was a beta and it expired and I can't get rid of it.

There's a DirectX uninstaller available that will work on your Win98 system (I've used it before without problems), but it's not setup for use with WinMe...after uninstalling, install the latest official release from MS.

As far as your WinMe system, I would try this...
From DOS, delete the ddraw.dll and ddhelp.exe files from your windows\system directory...

c:\>del windows\system\ddraw.dll ddhelp.exe

...then from Windows, reinstall the latest official release of DirectX from the site I linked to above...the latest version is 8.0a.;)

I'm currently having the same problem. I tried downloading the Direct Draw file but of course I can not overwrite or erase the existing one. The link above does not work for me does anyone else have a link to this Direct X uninstaller?

The 8.1 version of Direct X must be a beta with an expiration. I wasn't aware of that when I installed it. Oh well.

I just found this link for the Direct X uninstaller in another thread in case anyone is looking for it. It's kind of slow though.

this was sent to me in another thread.
there is a temp fix for DX8.1 there. I do not know the source, so use at your own risk.

This stinks, I'm at work and I don't get off for 3 more hours so I can't even try to fix my problem on my system:(

I hope it works, I've never really got along well with dos. but I'll give it a shot.

There should be another update out there, I'll have to look around for it.

Hey redduc900

Can't you just delete these files from windows, or will it stop you at the recycle bin???

I don't think you can delete those files directly from within Windows, I believe that they're in use by the OS...so they would need to be deleted from DOS or "Real Mode". Please see this thread regarding the DirectX BETA...

I seem to remember a certain company which foolishly decided to permanently disable DOS in Windows ME and higher. Bad move, microsoft, you shafted another user.

Sorry man, but I don't think there even IS a DOS in WinME or 2K.

Run that uninstaller that I posted above and then reinstall direct X 8.0. You will have to go into the help section of that program in order to find out exactly how to use the program. Basically the program creates a ini file that will remove all of the Direct X files when it is run. You don't have to wory about DOS because this program is run in "Safe Mode". Of course I am assuming that MS didn't get rid of "Safe Mode" in ME.

Do a search on DirectX 8.1 like i did and you'll find a updated version of 8.1,install it and you'll be back up again.I found 2 newer releases since the first one. In the mean time you can change your clock back a couple of days and the old 8.1 should work ok till you find the updated DX.

The 8.1´s were released as beta drivers for some time now.

The non-beta 8.1´s just got released.

Get them at IpKonfig
